Yes, be prepared to use force, but the primary purpose of a nation's military is to win wars. You don't do that by trying to determine what "appropriate force" would be. You do it with overwhelming force, superior firepower.

Sun Tsu, the Chinese philosopher general, in his treatise The Art of War, which by the way has been taught in war colleges and military academies in many nations for centuries, said this:

Supreme excellence is breaking your enemy's will to fight without fighting.

What Sun Tsu means is peace through superior firepower. You build the most powerful and combat ready military on the planet so that any enemy would seriously think twice before engaging.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the mastermind behind the attack on Pearl Harbor and the failed attempt to capture Midway Island in the central Pacific, tried to tell the Japanese general staff when they decided to take on the United States that he feared a protracted war with such an industrial giant. Just 7 months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, in June of 1942, at the Battle of Midway, he was proven correct.

In less than one day, outnumbered in ships, the US Navy under excellent leadership and with superior air power, destroyed the Japanese attack fleet in sinking 4 carriers and killing 90% of the Japanese Navy's top combat pilots while they were in their cockpits sitting on the deck. The Americans lost just over 300 men, the Japanese over 3000.

Though the Japanese had conquered a quarter of the western Pacific, they lost the initiative at Midway and never regained it again. However, the Japanese militants weren't about to quit. They were determined to fight to the last man, woman and child. It took an ungodly weapon to finally convince emperor Hirohito to command his military to surrender.

When war is inevitable, you go in it to win. The quicker you can do that, the less costly it is in lives and property.

You didn't say what's the purpose of the wars.

As a Veteran of the Korean conflict I can attest to the benefits of having served my country with honor and for going in as an innocent kid and emerging a responsible adult who can respect all those who wore the uniform and put themselves in harm's way. I agree with the idea of every citizen serving some form of patriotic duty for their country, both men and women. Some are fit for combat duty while others are not and can serve in other ways. Living in the land of the free is anything but a freebie. We must all be taught to be responsible and follow the rules and laws of the land for the benefit of the many and not for the selfish few. When we all pull together as a unified nation we are invincible, but when we are divided the house will fall. I lived through the WW11 era when patriotism was at its all time high. I now live in a divided nation and we must learn to be unified once again or face peril.
I've witnessed the erosion of respect and honor among those who participate in this forum. It's an "us" against "them" mentality that leads to a breakdown in civil discourse and deteriorates into shameful behavior. We are all Americans, regardless of our color, religion, politics or even sexual preferences (done discretely).
When humans break off into different tribal mores and take on the righteous mantle of my way is the right way and therefore your way is the wrong way, it results in hatreds and mistrust and division and tragedy. I say "live and let live". Each of us can follow their own path to happiness while not treading on the others who may follow another pathway just so long as neither one wishes to harm the other. We are a diverse nation made up of a melting pot of ethnic and religious and atheists and that's part of our great strength and innovativeness. Let's learn to be more tolerant of those who are different from us and show respect for all denominations of citizens if we're to survive as the human race. Remember the "GoldenRule" - treat others as you would have them treat you.

I agree totally but the left is leading many into communism and they think that is great!! The main policies of the left have created these divides and they are deliberately doing so to weaken this nation and they don`t even try to hide it!! The DNC blatantly supported the Marxist communist BLM!! They use race baiting to divide this country along with ignoring our immigration laws, destroying 1000s of American jobs, making us dependent on expensive foreign oil when we were energy dependent, doing their best to disarm Americans by adding outrageous fees, taxes and fines for armed citizens, mandating that Americans take an experimental drug that they claim is a 'vaccine', etc. If you want to call it 'us or them' you are correct because freedom loving Americans are fighting to keep this country intact and free!

Thank you for that good response. I (3507) changed my handle to robertx8y and almost never look at 3507's email, and I accidentally missed this response until late.
