Eric Cantor’s $3.5 Million Wall Street Job Isn’t Just for Cantor, It Is for Everyone Still in Congress

By: Jon Walker Tuesday September 2, 2014 8:21 am

Eric Cantor’s new job sends a clear message to all incumbents: toe the Wall Street line and you’ll be rewarded later
Bribing people with big bags of money or expensive gifts is so 20th century. Not only is it gauche to carry around suitcases full of hundred dollar bills, it is also stupid. Basically the only time American politicians ever get in trouble for corruption is when they accept really expensive Rolexes while in office or are literally caught with a freezer full of cash.
The perfectly legal way to influence policy makers is to simply let it be known that if they hold favorable voting positions, they will very likely be rewarded with lucrative jobs. There is no need for a quid pro quo or even explicit promise as long as a clear and consistent norm is established. This is what happened to Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA). From Market Watch:
Talk about victory in defeat: Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will be pulling in about $3.5 million thanks to his new job with Wall Street investment bank Moelis & Co.
It’s a huge raise for the Virginia Republican, whose salary as majority leader was a lowly $193,400.
Cantor, whose Republican primary loss to little-known Dave Brat stunned Washington, will open an office for Moelis & Co. in the nation’s capital and also work out of its New York City office.
This was about more than just Cantor. Every member of Congress has seen this news and gotten the implied message.
We have 20th century anti-corruption laws that are completely inadequate for 21st century issues of good governance. If you want to know why there is such a huge disconnect between what regular people want on economic policy and our what our “democratically elected” legislature vote for, this is likely at the heart of the problem.

Before you take me to task for the following, here is my precursor to my comment...RANT ON

Of course in contrast to Mr. Cantor, we have the bottom feeding pond scum sucking Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, whose only credentials for the job was collecting checks from major Democratic donors for multiple elections in multiple years. This is a man who left his wife and new baby sitting in a car, after leaving the hospital, to stop by a fund raiser to pick up donation checks.

RANT OFF

Are you just now becoming aware of the incestuous relationship between Wall Street, K Street and others of that ilk to future employment for our elected officials? It cuts across both parties. You might want to look at the incest between past Secretary of Treasury appointees, as well.

Next you might seek to look at the incest between past Press Secretary's, in both parties, and their jobs prior to Press Secretary and after being Press Secretary, as well as their familial relationships to members of the press and administration officials, of both parties.

If you have been aware that it has been going on forever, why is it you have been distracting us from the real problems?

As you chose Mr. Cantor, a Republican, did you hear what the Virginia Republican hierarchy did? If memory serves, they are so angry at the loss, they utilized something like 90% of all remaining party funds to pay off Cantor's reelection bills and left little to nothing to support the party candidate, chosen by the voters. The man voted absentee. Does he deserve reelection? In his mind, yes. He is as bottom, feeding pond scum sucking as the Governor. His ego could not stand the loss, so he resigned and left his constituents without representation until after the November election.

I think most people want corruption to cease in both parties. I guess you are only concerned with corruption of what you consider to be the "left." That is terribly partisan, not very smart, and destructive for our country.

No,,, I am just as concerned about it in YOUR party,, but from all indications,,, after electing Obama twice, you are fine with it on the left, if it benefits you.

He was rewarded by the system with $3.5,000,000. That seems to be about the going rate for congressional losers from both parties.

So, if there are losers on the left,,, why is there no Tea-party, on the left, trying to get rid of them,,,, that seems only to happen on the right,,,,,,

I am sorry you are unable to understand. It is supposed to mean what it means. It is as simple and uncomplicated as that. I hope "bumping my Eureka !! discovery" is not painful. I have no idea what that means.

Last time we checked, aside from you attempting to get your Grandmother pregnant, what you have been spewing around here amounts to a small spot of "cat vomit"....
