The VA Is Plowing Through Veterans Who Want To Be Vaccinated...What About Those Who Don't?

I was going to see when I could get vaccinated, I have a chronic cough and figured the sooner the better, when they called Wednesday and said I could schedule an appointment. When I asked when they said they had openings the next day for Phizer, which they had just started getting, they had been doing Moderna. I told them tomorrow was fine, and got an appointment for 12:45.

My wife had a slight reaction to the Moderna, to where she is going to take Benadryl ahead of time on the second, mine was almost no reaction short of very slight muscle touchiness for a day or two.

So I was asking how many people they were vaccinating in a day here at the Mather VA hospital, which actually serves a large geographic area in Northern California, they said about 500 a day, but they have done some bigger pushes when they were doing just Moderna. 15,000 a month doesn't seem like that much, but they are being way more careful than the public health accessed vaccines where you drive through and are supposed to sit unmonitored for 15 minutes before you leave. At the VA you sit in an observation area for 15 to 30 minutes, they watch you and take your temperature, and set up an appointment for your followup vaccine.

I was asking now that they are calling veterans to set up appointments how many they were getting that don't want it. They said it was too early to tell as they had just started that. I said something about those who don't get it shouldn't get hospital services if they get severe Covid, let them tough it out at home...her answer had sort of a cryptic reply, she said "we'll be taking care of those who care and using resources for them come the fall and winter".

The VA could easily start adopting policies on stretched out resources that put those who are anti vaxxers in a category where they are on their own. Last spring and summer they were already not jumping to do anything for people who seemed to have covid unless their symptoms were life threatening.

I disagree with you on denying treatment for those who decline the vaccine. I'm not ready to take it, at least at this time. I have the persistent cough, a side effect of two medicines I take. The meds are doing their job well on my blood pressure and diabetes, so my doctor doesn't want to change things. These new vaccines have been created with new technology and there is not enough evidence of possible long term negative effects. Also, I have a religious objection to these vaccines as they are made from cells from aborted fetuses. Although I have some underlying conditions and my age that would push me up the list, I am otherwise healthy, active, live alone in a small community. These things would push me down the list. I am satisfied to allow those at higher risk, and those politicians who think by virtue of being a politician they should move to the top of the list, receive the vaccines first.
