Special Interests.
Okay I can go along with that our government has failed to look out for the best interest of most of us.
I for one don't look for any special treatment from the government.
It is looking out for special interests that has gotten us into the mess we are in.
That leads to the question of who has gained & who has lost among us because of making laws for Special Interest Groups.
Most politicians cater to one special interest group or another. They of course being politicians either cater to money or votes not necessarily what is good for the country as a whole. I also think there are a plurality of voters who vote for what they perceive as their own special interest with no regards to the country.

We are all apart of many different special interests and those special interests are not static but change as we grow older.
Infant, toddler, pre schooler, student
Career healthcare, gov, tradesman, small business owner, farming.
Single, married, parent, rent, home owner
Empty nester, retired
You have unions, corporations, industries
The list is endless with them all standing in line at the fed gov money trough.
It would be nice to say just slash the fed gov, no more money to be handed out and the special interests will go away. But that would then mean only the richest with the most access to politicians would get what's remaining.
We have created a monster, and only personal responsibility can solve it.
