My brother in law visited China over 10 years ago. When he came back he said one of the things that made a profound impression was the very high percentage of the population that wore masks, because of pollution.
If most everyone in China was already wearing a mask because of pollution, which they were and have been for the past 10 years, then how did coronavirus spread when we're being told the only way to stop the spread is by wearing a mask?

Whats kinda weird is the chinese also wear them here in Texas , long before any corona crap...decade like you say, easily. Every Chinese student at UT Austin sported them every day, never seen them without a mask.

I lived and worked in Asia — not only in the PRC, but it was one place I lived over the years — through the SARS and Avian Flu years.
Many — but by no means all — in the cities who could afford masks, did so. They didn’t keep them on in their offices or shops, only while taking public transportation etc. It was not only because of the poor air quality, but also the dust storms that came in from the Gobi.
This was not the case in the countryside, where people were barely surviving.
Masks are perceived there as a courtesy to others, in case you may be infected with a cold or flu.
