There are no plans for retroactively testing people. Right now, the CDC has their hands full trying to stay up with current tests. Plus, there is a shortage of reliable test kits. As for other nations, there is evidence that similar spikes were noted in the Uk. Links were provided in the article. Australia's flu season starts after our season ends, June to September and peaks in August.

Time will tell.... Hopefully...

Here's an interesting development... The foreign students at my university have been in full quarantine for about two months now... No trips outside or people allowed in... Food deliveries are fine...

They have been cooperating for the most part and are mostly thankful for the security... But over the past week they have been complaining that the universities in our province, and throughout China, have allowed their foreign students to go out again...

Now, not to be disrespectful to my colleagues, but our international college has the worst management I've ever seen... It's commonly considered a punishment to be transferred there...

Anyways, today all the students were contacted and told to fill out a form... The university will be providing an undisclosed amount of money to each individual (this includes myself as I am on doing my?masters and have a scholarship..)...

Payoff for incompetence?
Or bribe for good feedback when this is over? My friends who are studying in other universities haven't received anything....

I'm curious... Thoughts?

Edit: Never mind... Apparently certain students with certain scholarships will receive money to help defray costs spent doing research... Not as interesting as I had thought

Time will tell, especially if we start to see drops in new cases. That may not happen anytime soon. Any individual can now be tested without referral. Second issue, states are provided federal assistance based on how many people test positive. Governors are now pushing for more tests.

As for your educational system providing payment....there are two ways to view it. If your system is a pay as you go or tuition, you can look at the checks as a partial refund on tuition paid.....I am assuming there are no professors on board to teach. A second way of viewing it is reparation for delayed graduation and commencement of gainful employment through no fault of the student. Certainly this is to gain positive public relations, but unless you are required to enter into a contract; payment for positive feedback, then I would not think badly of the university.

I offer this with caution, if you have not had the "flu" this winter, do stay at home. if you had the flu, it might be worthwhile to be tested.

That will be later as we have testing to run down people exposed to positive cases and people need to know if they have had it and have antibodies.

Trump is undoubtedly going to jump the gun and try to prematurely put people back out like it's time to move on

People will be demanding that rules be relaxed by May. CA isn't expected to peak until mid-May. Good luck keeping down on the farm by Memorial Day. He may cave to political pressure, or he may not. Have to wait and see how this all pans out.

Interesting article....

To what should the increased number of fatalities and cases requiring ventilatora b attributed to?

Also, because I may be wrong, is his definition of flattening the curve not inaccurate?

"It’s important to remember that a flat curve is not one in which no one gets infected. A flat curve is one which, at its peak, does not create enough critically ill patients to overwhelm the health care system."

I believe a flat curve is used to describe a situation where the numbers are no longer increasing, no?

And his chart shows that flu levels have remained the same or lower from previous years... No?

I apologize for calling you passive aggressive.

Not all patients need hospitalization, not all sick people had a "flu" test. Most were treated with standard methods and sent home. The "test positive for flu" graph you zeroed in on does not account for the dramatic increase in doctor visit for "Flu-like symptoms." "Flu-like illness reports exceeded 30,000 per week in early November 2019, and were soon running almost double the rate of previous recent years. Data source: https://gis.cdc.gov/grasp/fluview/fluportaldashboard.html

Nearly twice as many ILI visits were reported during the beginning of the 2019–2020 flu season than were reported in either of the two previous years. By December 2019, there were over 80,000 US patients seeking treatment for flu-like symptoms — long before Chinese authorities reported COVID to global health organizations on 31 Dec 2019."

Pennylynn,

please be careful with Han-uckus Deploracus, apologize profusely, or he might put you on his 'ignore' list.

Passive-aggressive he is not, but mendacious he is, for sure. No 'Conservative Christian' thrives in the Communist China today, but he has many friends here on OPP.

It difficult to tell who is and who isn't on OPP, but there are probably many on OPP since they think they have anonymity. You have to take their mendacity always with a grain of salt.

Thank you for the advice. I am on so many ignore list I have lost count. It is not that I indulge in name calling, as a rule I try hard to not let my emotions cloud my judgment and get in my way of reasonable discussion. My asking him if he is always so passive-aggressive was a mistake, and I did the right thing in apologizing. Being polite or doing the right thing should not be taken that I am his friend. Although I do include some OPP members as friends, it has taken years to cultivate those relationships.

Having said that, I agree that a real Christian can not thrive in China. To be sure, I have zero respect for the Chinese government. I am sure there are some very nice Chinese people, but I would not automatically embrace them or believe most of what they say.

Fauci may be a phony. Not the best expert to listen to by any means. Years ago he swooped in after Dr. Gallo was caught falsifying data in the HIV research and this is how he made a name for himself. Experts often disagree. Who you gonna believe? My definition of an expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less and they have literally reached the pinnacle of their own incompetence according to Dr. Lawrence J. Peter (the Peter Principle).

Nothing wrong with being truthful. If people don't like it then you don't need them around anyway. I am respectful until someone disrespects me. If they draw first blood, The gloves come off and I will let loose on them. It takes a lot for me to forget but not forgive if they show a little civility. I won't mention any names here. Mostly, I just ignore them or give than a short one sentence reply, occasionally. I don't block or ignore anyone and will read their posts. But too many have only their opinion with nothing to back up a said opinion. A complete waste of time. I am still learning to wean myself from these time-wasting trolls and ignore their tries to incite me or anyone else. A lot depends on how tired I am.

I think we are all getting a little punchy with cabin fever. I am trying to be mindful of that when I respond to others. I have spent far more time on OPP the past three weeks than I spend nearly all year. This is what happens when you are stuck at home 24/7.

I agree with you about CCP and China. I have nothing against Chinese people but a communist government can't be trusted and cannot be truthful. They will lie, without any compunction, right to your face, more so than a Jehovah's Witness to an outsider. Trump has tried to tell Americans that they are not our friends. The left is in lock-step with them and cancer within our midst.
