Inhuman rioters Hong Kong people's enemy
CHINADAILY

Parts of Hong Kong ground to a halt on Monday morning as black-clad rioters launched their so-called Dawn Action to paralyze the morning commute in an attempt to effect a "general strike".

The rioters were not only depriving law-abiding residents of their right to go about their normal life by interrupting the mass transit rail services and blocking major thoroughfares across several districts during the traffic peak hours on Monday morning.

They were also threatening residents' personal safety and even lives by starting fires on trains and throwing objects onto the rail tracks — aside from attacking motorists, passengers and even police officers who tried to remove barricades on the roads.

In one particularly heinous act, a group of rioters surrounded a passer-by, who disagreed with them, poured a flammable liquid on him and set him alight. The immolation happened in broad daylight and in front of media cameras.

In another incident, one rioter was shot when he and others tried to seize the gun of an isolated police officer. This confrontation could well have been avoided had they held up their hands after the officer drew his pistol in a warning action.

The forbearance and restraint Hong Kong police officers have consistently demonstrated over the past five months — emphasizing dispersal operations — seems to have emboldened some with a more violent disposition to unleash their aggression.

A few lunatics have even openly threatened on online platforms to kill the wife and daughters of the police officer who fired his gun on

Monday morning.

The leniency Hong Kong judges have so far demonstrated toward the offenders involved in the months-long unrest — by allowing them to apply for bail on easy terms and handing down extraordinarily light sentences — has also served to encourage inhuman terrorist acts.

So far, more than 3,000 people have been arrested for various offenses including assault occasioning bodily harm and arson during the five months of turbulence. But none of the arrestees has been jailed. Thanks to the judicial leniency, many rioters have made themselves repeat offenders.

Yet the intensifying violence is not simply because the rioters have been emboldened in their lawlessness by the lack of deterrent punishments. It is a politically motivated attempt by the rioters to deter the law-abiding public from speaking out against them and to disrupt the District Council elections.

Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor denounced the violence on Monday saying the protesters are relentlessly destroying society. She said the violence has far exceeded protesters' call for "democracy" and they had made themselves "the people's enemy".

Indeed the rioters' recklessness, their defiance of the law and their contempt for others who do not share their views shows it is they that manifest the oppression they claim to be fighting against.

If anyone is interested I have a video of the man who was set on fire... I can't post it on the thread..But I can send it to you in a PM... It is horrifying...

Hong Kong is made up of people who literally escaped the mainland and others who have 5 generations behind them of British law. China agreed to three generations of tolerance into the future for the citizens of Hong Kong and is already reneging on that promise. I certainly don't condone what the protesters have been doing but what on earth would anyone expect from a "free people" when the government arrives with one-size-fits-all leg-irons, figuratively speaking.

Any news organ that refers to rioters as "lunatics" and the "forbearance and restraint Hong Kong police officers" is dispensing propaganda, not objective news. I am sorry for the plight of the people of Hong Kong.

How has China reneged on the promise?

Seriously...

Setting folk on fire is the sign of lunatics... As is attacking civilians and vandalising private property...

The Hongkong police to date have shown remarkable forbearance... I hope that changes before more are injured...

My point exactly...

I don't understand how one can condemn Antifa, but support the protesters in Hong Kong...

(note: there are good and decent protesters in Hong Kong as well.. Who have had legitimate fears...I don't conflate them with the scum in this article)

China is attempting to get around the terms, I.E. the spirit of the agreement with Britain, by enacting laws that allow the mainland to remove anyone they choose from Hong Kong. That is what started this whole thing.

Adjectives and pejorative nouns do not belong in objective reporting. If they are included, you are reading manufactured opinion, I.E. propaganda. I didn't say they were not lunatics. I said using the word makes it propaganda... not news.

As for forbearance, shooting demonstrators and beating them with clubs is not showing restraint and forbearance.

The Hong Kong legislature proposed a law that would allow both the mainland and Hong Kong to extradite individuals wanted for crimes... The lack of an extradition law has led to numerous issues whee criminals escape prosecution by crossing over between the mainland and Hong Kong...

The law was in its initial form, and was unclear in a number of areas... The Hong Kong government agreed to postpone the vote on it until further studies were conducted to clarify the law and ensure that it could not be abused... The law was later scrapped entirely..

I'm not sure how you perceive this as China attempting to get around the original spirit of the agreement with Britain... Do you feel that the HongKong legislature has no power to enact laws in Hong Kong? They did under Britain.. And Hong Kong has extradition treaties with numerous other nations..

Right... What objective adjectives would you suggest for a group who doused an individual in gasoline and set them on fire?

Indeed.. After numerous attacks that have led to police officers being hospitalized the Hong Kong police have finally begun to push back... In my opinion, if you throw a brick or Molotov at an officer, or physically assault an officer, you should be beaten down or shot....

Also...Calling scum like that demonstrators is propaganda...

Is having escaped the mainland a crime?

There are no objective adjectives. All of them involve the speaker's/writer's opinion/judgment. I would refer to them as rioters. It is apparent that they qualify in that regard. I would hazard a guess that no one has certified them as lunatics. News reports should not attempt to persuade; just inform. That is why this country's press has gone to Hell; they all attempt to persuade now.

If one commits a crime before leaving the mainland there should be a legal mechanism to being one back to face the consequences of that crime, no?

I see your point...

It is well made...

To be fair.. China is pretty open about its propaganda

I was thinking of those people who escaped to Hong Kong before the turnover. I was under the impression that China regarded the act of leaving the mainland to be a crime.

Actually, that was one of the things about the original law that many were concerned about... Although I believe there has been a general amnesty offered....

I have a copy of the original law that was proposed...Somewhere on my computer... Just can't find it...

There were definitely something areas that needed to be clarified... Especially concerning what constituted an extraditionable crime..

But the law was in its infant form.... Is truly believe it is needed... Far too many cases of criminals evading authority by fleeing to Hong Kong.... Taiwan is pushing for an extradition agreement with Hongkong as well...

Unfortunately the original protest (which I agreed with) has morphed into this fiasco...

It could be either Hong Kong or mainland people. Any masks? Someone knows who is doing it. Just give all their agreed-upon rights back to them until the legally agreed upon date, unless one side wants chaos. Hong Kong's freedom must be leaking across the border and irritating someone.

They haven't lost any of their agreed upon freedoms... Where'd you get that idea?

So far this has been Hong Kong specific.. What interference from the Mainland has there been?
