Obama's Promised Change Creates a Mediocre America

By Michael Busler

Historically Americans never settled for mediocre. Not only did we want to excel, we wanted to be the very best at virtually everything. In a surprisingly short time since our conception, we accomplished the goal of being number one in everything from economy to innovation to patents to Nobel Prize winners to military power.

Then things changed. Now we are settling for mediocre. What happened?

America's past success has been stunning. Our nation was created in the late 1700's and by the early 1900's, we were a dominant force in the world; we innovated more, produced more and fought harder than any other country.

We showed the world that having a freedom-oriented society with a freely elected Democratic system of government and a free-market economy would lead to tremendous growth and a much higher standard of living for all citizens.

One reason Americans have always striven to be the best is that we had the freedom to do so and we were able to reap the rewards of our efforts. We also knew there were costs incurred and we, as the individuals who reaped the rewards, were personally responsible to ensure that these costs were paid.

Fortunately, the majority of Americans feel that all of us should have as much opportunity to find the road we wish to travel. We have made education a public good, therefore government makes sure all children have access to at least a high school education. After that, the individual must pay his/her own way, although the government will lend whatever is needed to attend whatever school is desired.

With that access to education, all Americans should be able to pursue their self-interest. And for about 200 years, Americans did just that. As some individuals found much success, the entire country prospered. With each major achievement, new higher goals were set. We fought in wars to bring peace to the world and developed technology to maintain our superior position in combat while minimizing the risk to human life. We won the race to explore space by putting a human on the moon, landing equipment on Mars and building an orbiting space station with a fleet of re-usable Shuttles to service it.

Our economy blossomed. We easily produced more goods and services than any country in the world. Most new innovative products came from the U.S. We invented the internet, which has radically changed people's lives. These accomplishments were a result of Americans being free to choose their road in life, while accepting the costs and reaping the rewards.

But, as was the promise six years ago, America has fundamentally changed. Because those who have achieved great individual success have reaped great individual reward, and because this reward is so much larger than the reward reaped by those who, for whatever reason, do not contribute, income inequality becomes an issue. The popular proposal to correct this inequality is to take away large amounts from those who have earned it and give it to those who have not.

Who says Americans settle for mediocre?

We are proudly #1 in:

1. the most people incarcerated per capita
2. the highest gun ownership per capita.
3. the highest rate of gun deaths per capita among first world industrialized democracies.
4. the most failed foreign interventions and wars since WWII.
5. the most expensive health care (while being 38th in positive health outcomes).
6. the longest and costliest elections..

We are emphatically not mediocre....we're #1 and damn proud of our exceptionalism!!! Why wouldn't Europe, Japan, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand want to be exactly like us???

I am sure, as we speak, they are eating their hearts out with envy.

Four out of 10 CPS freshmen do not graduate.

If they do graduate, 91 percent have to take remediation courses in college because they do not know how to do basic math and school work. Just 26 percent of CPS high school students are college-ready, according to the ACT subject matter tests.

Wow, that’s sad. And the bar is already set so low these days. It’s not like students from even the best schools are all that impressive. But perhaps these students just need better teachers. Let’s give these underpaid teachers a raise, and then I’m sure things will improve. How much do teachers in the Chicago Public School system make on average?
The average CPS teacher salary is $76,000. The last contract negotiations in 2012 gave CPS teachers 17 percent raises over three years.
The median household income in Chicago is just $47,408. The disparity is worse in Englewood, a neighborhood where 23.6 percent of residents are unemployed and the average per capita income is $12,255.
That is gross. It’s yet another glaring example of how absolutely broken our education system is. No amount of money could fix it.

Oh, this is rich! Your solution to our problems is...elect a woman as POTUS. There's some pretzel logic. Can I have a Shiner Bock with that?

What's next? Wait, let me guess....

First Hispanic POTUS
First Gay POTUS...no wait, we already had Buchanan
First Native American POTUS
First Arab POTUS
First One-Eyed Pirate POTUS
First Hunch-back with a skin condition...ok, you get the point.

So, by your standards, we should only elect someone that is NOT a white male. Anything (and I mean any "thing") else is totally acceptable and not only acceptable, but preferred. Forget experience, education, accomplishments, qualifications, integrity...just ANYTHING but another white guy in the...I almost hate to say it...WHITE house!! Does that make me racist because I said white house and not rainbow house or some non-descript housing arrangement for the prez house?

And, of all people, Elizabeth Warren? Which means that you are likely a resident of "anytown" near BAHSTON? Do you PAHK your CAH in the GARAAAAAAHHHHGE? Yeah, I've spent some time in Bean Town. What's the old sayin'? Nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

As a matter of fact, I was staying in Tewksbury, MA just off the interstate in a hotel when your fearless leader was sworn in. I flew in on the Wed or Thurs before...Jan 18th, 2009 I think it was. A foot of snow on the ground. That Saturday it snowed another friggin' foot. It was around 10 below +/-.

Anyway, back to "Pocahontas" Warren. She's basically Bernie Sanders in a wig. Good friggin' golly, you sure know how to pick 'em don't you?

The Marxist Progressives knew exactly what they were doing when they FIRST indoctrinated the birthplaces of our Freedom and Independence in New England.

I wonder what Sam Adams would think about your gun control stance? I'll tell ya what he'd think...He'd beat you about the head and shoulders until you got some damn sense in your head, that's what he'd think.

If things are so bad here why does everyone want to immigrate to the United States?

Is it because the United States is still free to pursue a better life or to get something for nothing?

Everyone doesn't want to emigrate to the United States. You might try chatting up some Western Europeans in one of their plentiful cafes. People in Norway, Netherlands, and Belgium make more money per capita than the U.S. They also have national health care. You think they fantasize about moving to Texas or Oklahoma??? For the "gun culture?"

this is the reason in a nutshell. ever since the late 60's (when the children took over) this country has been more and more caring less about the future because 'do your own thing' means the present, not the future. you see, when you care more about the future, your mind comes up with great ideas on how to deal with it (inventions and philosophy). children now run the show so until that changes...we are f*cked by mediocracy with child-like minds. read blithering brians post if you want proof.
