Genesis chapter 16

This chapter covers the birth of Ishmael;,the father of the Arabs,

Verse 1

It had been 11 years since God promised Abram a son. Abram was 75 when God first spoke to him. Abram is now 86. Isaac won’t be conceived for 13 years. Abram was trying to help God out.

Verse 2 - 6

Read Galatians 4:22 - 31. Abram and Sarai decide to have a child through Hagar, Sarai’s Egyptian handmaid. When Hagar conceives, she looks down on Sarai. Sarai deals harshly with her and she leaves.

Verse 7 - 14

Arabs are a savage people. For eight years, Iraq and Iran fought in the 1980’s. Neither country profited. Muslims are divided into Sunni and Shiitte. They travel to other countries, disregard their laws, and try to establish their own form of injustice.

Verse 15 and 16

Ishmael means God hears. Abram was 86.
