Should Churches have American flags, say the Pledge of Allegiance, and sing patriotic songs? Celebrate the 4th of July?

In 2005, much to my chagrin, I found I could not stand for the usual Pledge of Allegiance at our monthly Full Gospel Breakfast Meeting. The looks I got that day still sting and the lost of some friends was very hurtful.

The night before, I was convicted it was wrong. For hours I argued against this conviction into the wee hours. It went contrary to my entire upbringing and life and the fact I was a veteran. But the Conviction stood firm.

This is just my conviction. I am not saying I am right. I have arguments for it yet I feel this is something only the Holy Spirit can produce.

What do you believe on this topic?

I completely understand where you are coming from... I am a strong nationalist... And believe deeply in respecting the flag and anthem and other symbols of one's nation...

But should it be done in combination with one's faith?

Just this past week the university had a track meet... All of the teachers not in class were required to attend the opening ceremony... I was both shocked and disgusted when one of the Korean teachers refused to bear her flag for the group photo... She is a Jehovah Witness and claims allegiance to no nation...

Yet she broke no law and was perfectly within her rights...

I think each individual needs to make the call for themselves...

I personally would not wish to attend a religious group that made it obligatory to be nationalistic...

Great question Rumi...

And I can assure you that your actions would have in no way affected our friendship.... Though if you refused to stand for the anthem at a hockey game I might need to spend some time in the penalty box

For now...

There is growing opposition to it...

Apparently it is a violent, bloodthirsty sport that promotes inequality and competition amongst children and adults... Amen

What is so hard to believe, not that it matters? And doesn't matter. Not really knowing me you can freely call me a liar, but why do that? What do you gain and what does it change? You just choose to besmirch my name. Okay.

Yet the thread is not about me in particular but whether Churches should have American flags, say the Pledge of Allegiance, and sing patriotic songs? Celebrate the 4th of July? Any opinion on the topic or am I more fascinating to focus on?
