Yes, because that tax comes out first. So we are all, in effect, paying additional taxes with money ALREADY taxed

To all posters on this thread: You got that right. I'm old and retired on a fixed income from two retirement accounts, a saving account and one investment. Out of curiosity I and my calculator have come up with a guess that I pay 80 percent of my monthly income on all taxes to fed, state, county and city taxes combined which includes some hidden taxes on products I buy. How in heck am I to feel secure when the gov has given, under certain conditions, the right to banks to take some of my money and replace it with paper stock in their "failing" business. I have tried for many years to carry out plans to assure a financial comfortable ending but thanks to our fed and local governments I don't feel secure at all. So much for their guidance and help. Good luck is my only hope. Bet you can now guess how I vote. Sorry for the negative post but sometimes even I get pissed off on occasions.

I spent about 25 years of my life as an accountant. I actually did figure it out once, around the mid 90s. At that time, adjusting for the percentages that we pay in previously taxed money, it was 78%.

Go back a few decades, like to the 30s and 40s and see how many of those taxes existed then.

VERY. Right on, actually. Ugh, no wonder we're all in shock to credit card companies and it's so hard to save money!
