So what measures do you suppose said Democrat President (coming to a White House near you as early as January 2021 and not later than January 2025) is likely to take? New Zealand already has "common sense gun control" laws that would make an Illinois or Kalifornia politician wet and soil their panties in envy and yet the TWO Mosque shootings STILL HAPPENED! What makes you think (excuse me, FEEL) that more laws would change anything? Ban private ownership of firearms? How are they gonna enFORCE that? Suppose that they do attempt to confiscate all privately owned firearms. How will that work? They don't even know who owns what! Suppose they mandate that all firearms owners turn in their arms bya certain date. Further, suppose that 97% of gun owners meekly turn their guns. WOW! A FedGov program NINETY SEVEN PER CENT EFFECTIVE! Positively beggars belief, doesn't it? Of course I very much doubt any of the ILLEGAL gun owners would turn in their guns. But EVEN IF they got a 97% compliance rate, that would still leave more gun owners than all the members of the armed forces COMBINED!!! And it would leave the trigger-pullers at something like a FIFTEEN TO ONE DISadvantage. How do ya like THEM apples, AF1?

Here the ultimate goal is to use a European or Canadian type restrictions on gun owners.

Precisely. The problem with that scenario is that they forget four basic principles which prevail in any situation where humans live in groups.

1. All governments derive their power - ALL THEIR POWER - from the consent of the governed. Said consent may be withdrawn at the will of the governed. Such consent may be active, tacit or coerced but it is still consent.

2. All compliance is voluntary. Be it to laws, rules, military orders, constitutions or the bylaws of the Tuesday Afternoon Quilting and Literary Society; all compliance is voluntary. The more onerous compliance becomes, the less likely becomes compliance. As I see it, the biggest difference between actual criminals and "law-abiding" citizens is the threshold of onerousness sufficient to induce non-compliance.

3. The ratio of "Indians" to "Chiefs" will always be in favor of the "Indians". The governed have always and WILL always outnumber their would-be rulers - including said "rulers'" minions.

4. As Stalin put it, "Quantity has a quality all its own." A sufficiently large number of sufficiently motivated unarmed surfs can take down an armed and armored knight. They will not do so easily or bloodlessly but they CAN do it.

Finally, while Lincoln was correct in what he said about fooling the people, he should have known that you NEVER need to fool ALL the people ANY of the time. To have your way you only need fool ENOUGH of the people ENOUGH of the time. Would-be rulers who forget these principles have a tendency to wind up on the gallows, or the block or the wall.
