Newsflash: President Trump’s declaration of emergency regarding the border is fundamentally different from all of the other emergencies people throw around. Now, I know that might seem like a redundant statement, but it is a fundamental truth. On the other hand, when Barack Obama declared emergencies, he bypassed legislation to change how the United States is governed. He created new rules and orders on a whim, and the results bore trackable negative consequences. Not a single 'Obama emergency' was an 'actual' emergency, it was a vehicle to altering how government is conducted by executive fiat, doing an 'end run' around Congress.
In contrast, President Trump is simply trying to find money to carry out laws that are already in the books. Rather than defying Congress,
he’s trying to do exactly what they have demanded through legislation.
So let's put that in perspective. Obama made new rules. President Trump has done nothing of the sort. Most importantly, he isn’t even using his declaration of emergency to take funds against the will of Congress. The money the President is redirecting to the border is already under his discretion.
