Tonight, 5/16/14 @ 7pm central time, NBC will carry a news hour story of a Minnesota home owner convicted of murdering 2 intruders aged 18 and 17.

I would like to hear the opinions of the self defense proponents on this particular case. Watch it and let us know.

As a spoiler, I understand the mans fear. Alone in his home, victimized in the past. He installed surveillance cameras and armed himself. The cameras tell the story and will be on air. My opinion is the man went past the point of personal protection. He let the pair come into his home. Shot (recorded on audio) both several times and talked on tape of the good "finishing shot" under the girls chin after shooting her multiple times.
The case will be appealed, as not all of the surveillance tape was shown to the jury. That shows the couple breaking into the house and looking into windows before busting the door.

Generally he can not take action as long as they are outside of his home, but once inside he has a right to take defensive action. From what you are saying, he continued to fire even after the "threat" was eliminated. That is what will cook his goose.

I'd take my chances on being judged by 12 instead of being carried by 6 any day of the week.

I saw those videos and this guy (home owner)is no doubt a sick bastard. That said the two had burglarized his house once before and stolen prescription drugs from his home and were caught with them in their car.
I don't see anyone in this case being in the right. If I were on the jury I would have to consider the state laws and adhere to them strictly since in my opinion they were both wrong. 5/16/14 @ 7pm central time, NBC will carry a news hour story of a Minnesota home owner convicted of murdering 2 intruders aged 18 and 17.

Homeowners have the right to protect their home and simply shooting them to stop their "invasion" would not be questioned. However, referring to an up close shot on a wounded assailant as a "finishing shot" indicates that he is not satisfied with stopping the invasion, but wishes to end their life. That is where the line is crossed.

Two problems with his situation. First, they had broken in before and he was aware that they were there to burgle, not cause physical harm. Two, he premeditated killing them and carried through with doing so, even after wounding them enough to stop a threat.

Otherwise I agree with you. I am fully in support of gun ownership and see no reason why you shouldn't shoot someone who illegally enters your home.

A persons home is the castle. If burglars know that if they are caught inside they could be legally executed we all might be safer. I don't care that he executed them in revenge. If they had chosen God's way instead of the demorat's way they would still be alive. Why should the man be put in prison for protecting his property. He only killed two and the VA killed 40 in Phoenix alone. Where is the relevance? Gov employees can kill veterans for money (bonuses) and get off without a hand slap. It's ok for the gov to kill people and not citizens. When is gov going to be held accountable? Harry Reid said, "Romney hadn't pad his taxes. He has his records." How did Dirty Harry have Romney's records? It's illegal for the IRS to share personal tax records with anyone. What I am witnessing is a MORAL DECAY of AMERICA. To answer the query: At that point where defense become offense it is murder. One can defend with deadly force until the threat is no more; then, call the police. They may get there in 30 minutes to 4 hours and in some areas not at all. Good luck America.

Were I on the jury I would find him NOT guilty. A man/person should have the right to protect his home and property from CRIMINALS!

In Texas, a person can justifiably and potentially use deadly force against another individual if: he or she believes deadly force was necessary at the moment, believes he protected him or herself against attempted deadly force, prevented an act of kidnapping, homicide, rape, aggravated rape, robbery, or aggravated robbery.

I own more weapons than that one Bill. ;) That one is right by my bed and easy to get. I've never had to use it in all the years we've lived here and I hope I never do.

Seeing first hand what a 45 will do to a person I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of those bullets.
