Darthmouth College charitable "Phiesta canceled due to one student's complaint of racism

UNBELIEVABLE!!! ONE student at DARTMOUTH COLLEGE complained that the Phi Delta Alpha fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority had planned a "PHIESTA" event to RAISE MONEY FOR CARDIAC TREATMENTS AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL. The "Phiesta” event , scheduled for a week before Cinco de Mayo, invited paying guests to hear music, sip “virgin pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris” and enjoy Mexican themed snacks, like chips and salsa, guacamole and burritos.

Junior, Daniela Hernandez sent an email to various college administrators and Greek association officials.

"As a Mexican-born, United States raised, first-generation woman of color, it was sadly unsurprising that a culturally-themed party was seen as a casual venture for such a privileged institution such as Dartmouth.

“There are various problematic structures and ideologies regarding a Cinco de Mayo-inspired event, and I am sure that we, as a Dartmouth community, could learn from the extensive literature written about the Americanization of Cinco de Mayo and its construction as a drinking holiday in the United States, cultural appropriation and the inappropriate usage of cultural clothing, and the exploitation of groups of people and cultures for the sake of business opportunities.”

Hernandez called the planned event “exploitive,” “inappropriate.” Or, in a word, racist.

The fraternity caved: "We felt that the possibility of offending even one member of the Dartmouth community was not worth the potential benefits of having the fundraiser,” Phi Delta Alpha President Taylor Cathcart.

This "Phiesta" was held for two previous years without complaint!! Amazing! Hernandez complains that a charitable event, which COULD HAVE BEEN instrumental in SAVING LIVES, and was being held in AMERICA, is being AMERICANIZED?? How Could We?!!! She should actually deem it a compliment to her heritage. That fraternity had some nerve!! Imagine - affiliating Mexico with a philanthropic, humanitarian festival. Why, they should have been tarred and feathered!! Hernandez was raised here, lives here, is being educated here, and it's an INSULT to be Americanized?!! DAMN!!

I hope Dartmouth has learned its lesson. Gratitude toward our country is non-existent. If you want to sponsor an event, make it a "CELEBRATE AMERICA" one. It's about time we stopped pandering to people who take advantage of America's resources, her taxpayers, and generosity and start promoting our own commendable culture and traditions. Today's immigrants are so anxious to come here, yet when they do, rather than showing their appreciation by making an effort to assimilate, they expect us to cater to them, their customs, and their demands.

I would hope that thousands of students, faculty, fraternity and sorority members, and alumni would flood the administrators and Greek Association with vociferous complaints over that asinine catering to one foreigner.

The new liberal, progressive, politically correct America. The protected, coddling of a lonely cry. Had it been an event, and a Christian complaining an offense to there faith, the fund raiser would have marched on. It is sad to see the clouded mindset of America.

Your post is page two of new topics, I don't think it is getting the attention it deserves. The schools today and there text seem to be ashamed of our founding fathers, tradition, and culture. Progressives
liberals have destroyed the greatest nation on earth. turning from God, to there own desires, this is what happens.

Thank you Jack. I was wondering if I had inadvertently posted something offensive.

It is so hard to believe that, in such a short time, much that we once treasured is being challenged and degraded by strangers. They have been admitted into our country - some legally, some not - and rather than showing their appreciation and gratitude, they blatantly criticize and intimidate. Where is the common courtesy, civility, and comity we once shared? What happened to the unity of the people and of purpose, the dedication to the flag and the obvious patriotism that was so prevalent on Sept. 12, 2001?

It's really sad, Jack.

If I didn't know God was in control, and the fall of American society, Morality, ethics, and turning from God. I would be a stressed out mess, instead look up and thank the Lord to be living in a time to see his word (prophecies) being fulfilled. So many prophecies converging all at the same time.
Gods will be done

Let me try to follow your point here: One voice made a difference? Am I right? Any problem?

I believe that when one voice among many is responsible for changing a wrong into a right, it is an admirable, even a courageous thing. However, the problem here is that Ms. Hernandez' voice was one filled with unwarranted bias and false facts. She criticized the "Phiesta" as being "for the sake of business opportunities" when, in truth, it was a charitable event for the sake of cardiac treatments at a local hospital.

It seems that the spelling of the word "Phiesta" (a play on the word "Fiesta") which defined the celebration as one planned by the Greek organizations, was the biggest bone of contention. As a matter of fact, it was declared that the word "Phiesta" was racist.

After referencing this subject further, I discovered that Hernandez accusation's did not dissuade A Phi and Phi Delt from their efforts to raise money for the hospital. They accessed an online crowd sourcing website and came close to nearly reaching its $7,000 goal. BRAVO!!

I wonder what Ms. Hernandez was doing on St. Patrick's Day? Maybe Ms. Hernandez was offended that the drinks were non-alcoholic??
