The Muslim country's especially Yemen,Saudi, Indochina, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran?, Somalia,etc., practice Sharia law. It is my opinion that this religious practice is rooted in the time frame preceding the 13th century and was refined by dirty old white bearded old men deciding how best to control women, servants and slaves. In the same time frame,Christianity was undergoing the Inquisition. Berkas and Nuns apparel prior to 1960 are not that much different except their faces are not covered.
To appreciate Sharia law you have to witness a mullah roaming a shopping mall area with his whip swatting women on the ankles if even a slight bit of skin is exposed. This is probably part I of the reason that Muslim men do the family shopping.
I have a friend in Saudi that I have visited multiple times at his mansion enclave and never met his family. I had dinner in his house and he served the meal while I sat by myself in his spacious gold trimmed dining room. In another situation,I attended a celebratory dinner with 100 other guests. That included wives and family and family entertainment.
Now,enough background, to the heart of the issue. Most of the attitudes by religions were put in place? In the Middle Ages by Christians

I have heard that at least 50% of Muslim women prefer to leave things alone. Obviously this Ali person thinks this is oppressive. And she's right! The Dutch may also have been right too! Remember,the Shah of Iran tried to relax some aspects of Muslim law and the Mullahs took care of him. Now,Saudi women are campaigning to be able to drive. Perhaps some cracks are showing up. Muslims rejecting this Ali person is not unusual. Many Muslim men consider her an embarrassment. How many years have passed since Muslim men had multiple wives that weren't divorces.
As far as Brandeis is concerned,they didn't do their homework, period.. She wants a podium and the Muslim's don't want her to have one. Look who won! The religious Muslim conservatives. Women in the US don't want Vagina probes and want to use contraceptives. Who is dictating? The white haired old men religious Christian conservatives. The same hypocrites that are demanding small government are the ones forcing government into people's and predominately women's personal lives. In the bedroom yet! Are you conservatives going to take away women's right to drive too? Just like the Muslims!
The problems are certainly there but what's to be done about it? The women in Afghanistan that Laura Bush and Georgie boy liberated are now in jeopardy if we leave. That's the only reason to maintain a presence. There is no strategic value to that country.think about it? Now,it's your turn to fry yourself.
