Been there once in my life because internet was down at work, and I needed to send a report, so I wanted to use their WIFI.
Did you know that if you go in there, and order a cup of coffee, they look at you like you have two heads, and want 4 bucks for it when you finally make them understand that you just want a cup of coffee?
I went to the gas station across the street, paid .79cents for coffee, and sat in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express to send my report.

Had that experience once, went into a Starbucks and read the wall of horrors. listing every combination of garbage imaginable. I was forced to ask the counter girl if they had any "just plain black coffee". She said yes, but you won't like it, no one does and that is why it isn't listed. I bought it anyway but I should have taken her words to heart and walked out. After one or two sips I threw it away.

If I want my coffee all foo-fooed up, I'll ad some Bailey's Irish Cream to my Folgers.

If I add anything to my Community Coffee, it will be Bailey's Irish Cream.

You and Arch can have that Baileys drek, I prefer Sambucco or Anisette.

'Drek,' huh? I guess to each their own.

I have never heard of either of those creme/liqueurs, but will look for and try 'em. Quite frankly, as I like my coffee black, it is rare that I add any kind of creme additive. The exceptions usually occur on camping/fishing/hunting gatherings of the Slatten brothers. It is almost a family tradition to spike our coffees around the campfire with Bailey's Irish Creme. Our local supermarkets even carry a non-alcoholic version.

Thanks for the suggestions.

No cream in those liquors, that is why I prefer them. I am a Licorice fanatic and these really spice up the coffee with this flavor. But, like all such things a little satisfys for the whole year so I drink my coffee black except around Christmas and New Years.

I love licorice* myself, but rarely allow myself to eat it unless it's sugar-free. Being diabetic is also my reasoning for rarely sharing Bailey's with my brothers except for special occasions. It is why I searched for and became aware of the non-alcoholic version.

I especially love the soft Australian-style licorice, but it is difficult to find in our area. Walgreens used to carry it, but no more.

*Traditional black licorice is preferred.

Best Licorice in the Northeast was produced by a company named Switzers. Hershey's Twizzlers were a competing brand but Switzers cleaned their clock, without question, being the superior product in both taste and texture. Hershey bought the brand and simply took it off the market, leaving no choice but to buy Twizzlers or go without. Twizzlers were and are so bad I have gone without for the most part.

I don't even bother with Twizzlers, as I'd rather do without.

I can match your one time experience.. It was a temp. setup for advertising in a rail road station.. In Chicago?? not sure..

But yes they look real strange when all you want is black coffee... I am more of the 79 cent person..

However, I do have a fine son who gives me coffee from near and far.. and he has resorted to Starbuck coffee a time or two..

When I make it myself, I do not follow the instructions on the bag, but is comes out pretty good to my taste..

Instructions are for those with little, or no knowedge about how things work. I always disregard them. Until it doesn't work. Then I dig through the trash to find them. My wife thinks it's funny. I don't.

Sambucca and Anisette are anise based liqueurs with a relatively low alcohol content. Sambucca is traditionally served neat with three coffee beans floating on top. "Con Mosca", The Three Flies of Life.
One particularly good anise based liqueur is Punch Abruzzo, also known as Evangelista. It is difficult to find, but if you ever find one, buy it. It removes all indiscretions from your palate and erases a hangover for the next day.
Pernod and Pastis are good too, and absinthe for the adventurous.
Cheers!
