According to the NYT, they (Muller inc) were looking for the Access Hollywood tape. So, what does that tape, that was played up by the media, have to do with Russia?? Was Mueller not charged with investigating Russian Collusion?

The two special prosecutors that I remember also did not stay 'on topic'....it's the nature of the beast. The investigation of possible wrong doing meanders.

The Nixon investigation started with a third rate burglary and led to the White House tapes, an enemies list, and possible impeachment.
The Clinton investigation started with an investigation into Whitewater issues and ended up with Monica Lewinski's dress. (And let's not forget the hypothetical dead bodies).

It's not out of the question that the Trump investigation started with Russian collusion and may end up with money laundering. That's the way investigations bounce.

Mueller has systematically worked his way up the chain of Trump's inner circle from before during and after the campaign. Cohen was the last one if you want how far Mueller has gotten.

That's the nature of witch hunts. When they don't find anything pertaining to the original mandate, they go all over the map to find something, anything, to justify their time. It would be laughable if it weren't so openly seditious.

Mueller is looking at Russian ties to the campaign and obstruction of justice. When he finds evidence of additional crimes he is not supposed to ignore them, instead he is supposed to turn them over to the appropriate federal prosecutor. In this case fron the Southern district of New York, incidentally a Trump appointee. He then determined the evidence was compelling enough to request a warrant and a federal judge agreed. The entire thing is textbook proper and easy to understand. Even if the electoral college puts a mobster in the presidency that mobster is not above the law, and that’s a good thing.
