The 12 Step AOL Recovery Program

The 12 Step AOL Recovery Program

1. We admitted we were duped by clever ads featuring attractive people having what looked like fun with computers. We were lured by the siren song of "You've Got Mail!" We called 1-800-SCREW-ME and we got set up, signed up, and screwed up.

2. We've come to believe that only a power greater than ourselves can return us to sanity. Mainly it's our credit
card provider saying we're over our credit limit.

3. We made a decision to turn our lives away from AOL and join the rest of the Internet, using email programs that work, browsers that take us to sites not owned by AOL, and delivering us into the email boxes of people who can spell.

4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves and said, "Yes, we want more out of life than
'A/S/L checks' and having our name sold to marketers."

5. We've admitted to God, ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of AOL. We were wrong. We should never have given AOL our credit card in the first place.

6. We were entirely ready for God to remove these defects of character from our soul and our credit card company to remove those delinquent items from our credit report.

7. We humbly asked Steve Case not to bill our credit card ever again. (Well, we asked some 12 year old AOL support rep not to bill the credit card again, but he turned around and gave us six months free usage -- but AFTER THAT, by God, we're drawing the line!)

8. We made a Buddy List of all of the people we ever forwarded SPAMs and Internet Hoaxes such as "Bill Gates
wants to send you $100", "Congress is enacting an email tax", and "FREE PORN" to. We became willing to take them off of our Buddy list (and put them on our ICQ list!)

9. We made direct amends to people whenever possible, except when it would result in our getting our asses kicked
for sending such SPAM.

10. We continued to regret our decision to go with AOL and forever expressed our shame and sorrow to our families, friends, and computer geeks that we know for disappointing then -- even though they all warned us about AOL.

11. We sought, through a non-AOL browser and the Google search engine, understanding, guidance, and a decent chat room.

12. Finally, after all of this, we now carry the message to others infected with the AOL.EXE virus. We hold them, love them, console them, counsel them -- and, if that doesn't' work we tell them "format C: -- it's the only way to true liberation."

A friend of mine told me that where he worked, if they received a resume from someone using an "AOL" email address they didn't even read the email. It went immediately in the round file if it was paper or if it was in an email it was deleted.
