Federalist doesn't say that but if that's true then there is no reason you need semi automatic weapons. The whole reason behind the second amendment was so a despot couldn't use a free standing army to suppress the populate as King George did with the Colonies. If you don't fear the military but believe they are on your side then you don't need weapons to protect yourself against them do you...

How many different interpretations of the 2nd amendment are you going to come up with before you settle on one that makes any sense?

Federalist #46 / James Madison

You don't have a freaking clue why the founders included the 2nd amendment.

No, we don't need weapons to protect us from our military, we need weapons to defend our country against all enemies, foreign and domestic (there is an abundance of both out there). We also need weapons to protect our lives and those of our families and friends from violent humans and dangerous animals. If you have never encountered either of these, then you will never understand why we have every reason to own a semi-automatic firearm.

I love how you people prop each other up no matter how ignorant your statements are. You people only know the parts of our history that you are interested in. Read the second amendment and it tells you exactly why it was written. We just engaged in a war with a despot who used the worlds largest and strongest freestanding army to try to suppress the citizens. This is why a well trained militia was to be kept instead of a free standing army--so they could never be used against their own people. If you have no fear of our military though then you have no reason or need for a semi automatic weapons.

snip<< In June of 1787, James Madison addressed the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on the dangers of a permanent army. “A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty,” he argued. “The means of defense against foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home. Among the Romans it was a standing maxim to excite a war, whenever a revolt was apprehended. Throughout all Europe, the armies kept up under the pretext of defending, have enslaved the people.” That Madison, one of the most vocal proponents of a strong centralized government—an author of the Federalist papers and the architect of the Constitution—could evince such strongly negative feelings against a standing army highlights the substantial differences in thinking about national security in America between the 18th century and the 21st.

No man has a greater regard for the military gentlemen than I have. I admire their intrepidity, perseverance, and valor. But when once a standing army is established in any country, the people lose their liberty. When, against a regular and disciplined army, yeomanry are the only defence [sic], — yeomanry, unskilful and unarmed, — what chance is there for preserving freedom? Give me leave to recur to the page of history, to warn you of your present danger. Recollect the history of most nations of the world. What havoc, desolation, and destruction, have been perpetrated by standing armies!

The second amendment was written to provide for a replacement for a freestanding army. If however you have nothing to fear from the military and you believe they will check any despot then there is no need for the populace to have semi automatic weapons.

How many different interpretations of the 2nd amen... (show quote)

This is the interpretation that I've always had and if every you read about the reasons behind the second amendment you will see that I am correct. As for protecting against enemies foreign and domestic I'm pretty sure the military takes care of foreign and since you and your fellow cons are quick shooters what's the need for a semi auto weapon?

Here are a few links to get you started.

The question I have is since you cons are so in love with the constitution and believe in following it to the letter why is it you ignore the real reason behind the second amendment?

Okay, let's say the 2nd Amendment gets repealed (fat chance!). Now what are you
going to do about the 300,000,000 plus firearms already in the hands of American
citizens.

An aside: Honduras has the most restrictive gun laws in the world (for private citizens, that is.). That country also has the highest crime rate.

In Switzerland every male age 18 must serve in the military and when he finishes his
service he KEEPS his weapon.....and is REQUIRED to have it in his home. That country
has the lowest crime rate in the world; next to NONE.
