We paid our house off several years ago. After a couple of months of not hearing from anyone I went to the city to get our DEED. I was informed that deeds were no longer issued, they weren't necessary as long as your taxes were kept up there was a record of you "owning" the property. I've kept the payoff check and receipt to this day. You really do not own your property. Mike

And every state that has property taxes has robbed their citizens of the American dream of owning property. Just not pay your property taxes for one year and you will find out who really owns your property and it isn't you.

That is so true. I paid off my house in January of 2014. I assumed the taxes were paid and I would be billed when they were due. In the summer I received a letter from the County Assessor informing me that my home would be sold for delinquent taxes. I was told that it was my responsibility to make sure the taxes were paid and the county does not send bills. Because the taxes were late, they would only accept a bank draft. So that is how I learned about my real estate taxes. I totally agree. I still don't and never will own my home because the "State" owns it and if I don't give them protection money every year, that will take it. When the housing bubble broke and my house went from $225,000 to $118,000, my taxes only went down 5%. However as housing prices went up my taxes increased immediately.

That is criminal. I would definitely move out of that State as soon as I retired.
