Evangelist Billy Graham dies at age 99; reached millions

The Rev. Billy Graham, who transformed American religious life through his preaching and activism, becoming a counselor to presidents and the most widely heard Christian evangelist in history, has died.

Spokesman Mark DeMoss says Graham, who long suffered from cancer, pneumonia and other ailments, died at his home in North Carolina on Wednesday morning. He was 99.

Graham reached more than 200 million through his appearances and millions more through his pioneering use of television and radio. Unlike many traditional evangelists, he abandoned narrow fundamentalism to engage broader society.

From the gangly 16-year-old baseball-loving teen who found Christ at a tent revival, Graham went on to become an international media darling, a preacher to a dozen presidents and the voice of solace in times of national heartbreak. He was America's pastor.

Graham retired to his mountain home at Montreat, N.C., in 2005 after nearly six decades on the road calling people to Christ at 417 all-out preaching and musical events from Miami to Moscow. His final New York City crusade in 2005 was sponsored by 1,400 regional churches from 82 denominations.

Presidents called on Graham in their dark hours, and uncounted millions say he showed them the light. He took his Bible to the ends of the Earth in preaching tours he called "crusades." Even now, anywhere a satellite, radio, TV, video or podcast can reach, his sonorous voice is probably still calling someone to Christ.

=======================

I feel so sad for this. I am a Catholic but I love the Rev. Billy Graham. He is a man of God. I remember when I was still very young, I watched and listened to him preached the Gospel of God. I am certain that Rev. Graham has a special place in God's kingdom.

May sincere condolences to his children. God loves all of them.

Surely he will be missed by the Christians who remain, bahmer, -

but now he can see Jesus face-to-face, and think how glorious his reunion with his beloved wife, Ruth, was this morning.

There are a lot of people rejoicing in heaven tonight, at his homecoming.

A man I regard to be a Bible scholar, asked me this morning, "Is Billy Graham our Methuselah?"

He was referring to the Biblical passages in Genesis 5:27 "So Methuselah's life lasted 969 years; then he died."

Methuselah was Noah's grandfather, and was also an ancestor of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

Immediately after Methuselah's long and righteous life ended, God had Noah build an ark, - then the flood came upon the earth.

Genesis 7:10: "Seven days later the waters of the flood came on the earth."

As my Biblical scholar friend wondered, "God has removed Billy Graham from the ever increasing evil present in our society."

"What now will come upon the earth?"

We can look only to prophecy.

Remember our life on earth is only temporary. Rev. Graham has finished his journey with so much accomplishments on earth for God's Kingdom. Now is in glory with God in heaven forever.

I think he saw that Donald Trump was taking the leadership of the country and sighed a heave of relief...

I think you're right, maryla,

I love your perspective on this.

I have always believed God raised Donald Trump up , and gave him this task.

Certainly, Billy Graham and his son, Franklin Graham supported President Trump's campaign.

It is a reprieve for our country, no matter how brief, after our appalling inability to perform as an ethical nation under the lack of leadership of the totally corrupt Barack Obama.

I give monthly to BGEA (Billy Graham Evangelical Assn) and I remember writing to Franklin on his stance. He was always I am not going to get into politics,
etc.. After all those pastors endorsed DT, I figured why not try. I don't know the true reason but I did mention the church is in danger with Clinton as our president.

I wrote a book too and stated how God works in ways to discipline us and correct when we go astray. When BHO funded tax dollars going to embryonic stem cell research, this was wrong and a reason for that horrendous oil spill we had a few years back.

Let's continue to pray for Trump and that he realizes his dream of getting more Republicans into Congress. More which share in his populist version of putting America first!! /
