02/19/2018 Sheriff Offers Free Gun Class for Teachers … Slots Fill in 20 Minutes. Teachers and Administrators have had enough.

A sheriff in Ohio thinks one way to prevent mass shootings at schools is to arm teachers and make sure they know how to protect their students.

One day after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman, Douglas High School in South Florida, which left 17 people dead.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones posted a video to Facebook explaining that “the current way we do things in the school system needs to be changed.”

“We need to put armed personnel in schools,” he said in the video.

“We need to look at metal detectors.

This is not going to stop or go away but we need to be prepared and we don’t need to have our heads in the sand.”

Later, when explaining who in schools should be armed, Jones suggested that retired police officers or military veterans could be hired as guards. Or, he said, perhaps school teachers need to be armed and trained.

On Sunday, Jones went a step further, posting on social media that he’d be offering a “free concealed and Carry class” for school teachers in his county.

I am going to offer free concealed and Carry class free 2 teachers in butler county.

Limited number. Details coming soon on line. Also training on school shootings. — Richard K. Jones (@butlersheriff) February 18, 2018

Jones said in a follow-up tweet he’d accept 50 candidates for the class, and that interested school employees should email his office.

Within 20 minutes, he said he’d already received 50 requests, and interest only grew from there.

Over 50 requests in just 20 minutes. Continue those emails, you’re not out of the ballpark. We will come up with a plan. Thank you good citizens of Butler County for doing the right thing! #kidscomefirst! — Richard K. Jones (@butlersheriff) February 19, 2018

On Twitter, many teachers responded positively to Jones’ plan, indicating that they’d love to learn how to use firearms to protect their students.

In an interview Sunday with WLWT, Jones admitted that he knows his plan will spark some controversy, but still, he thinks it will be an effective way to deal with the issue at hand.

“We’ve got to do something, and I’m doing it today,” he said.

“We’re going to teach them about school shootings, what to do when someone brings a gun to the schools and you at least know how to deal with a gun.

Hhow to identify the gun, how many rounds that gun can shoot and what a bullet can do.”

He said the final decision about whether or not to arm teachers will come from local school boards, but at least for right now, he’s doing his part to improve school safety.

“I believe that school teachers should be taught how to deal with guns, when guns come to the classroom,” Jones told WXIX.

“What guns can do when they come to the classroom, and if the school boards want to give the authority to teachers to be armed.

The school boards can do that, they have the authority to do it, but I’m going to do my part, and I assume I’m probably the only one in the state of Ohio that’s doing that — but something has to happen.”

Jones is not the only one calling for teachers to be armed.

Florida state Sen. Dennis Baxley proposed a bill that would allow certain teachers in the state to be armed.

The legislation will be taken up on Feb. 20, according to Breitbart.

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said last week that states “clearly have the opportunity and the option” to allow trained teachers to carry guns in schools.

“This is an important issue for all states to grapple with and to tackle,” she told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, as reported by ABC News.

“I think this needs to be part of the broader, more robust conversation about how can we avoid these things in the future, and how can we ensure that when my child, your child, goes to school in the morning.

They’re going to go to a safe and nurturing environment.”

Southern Boone School District brings police officers on campus during school hours

BOONE COUNTY, Mo. - After tragedy at a high school in south Florida, police in southern Boone County are taking action.

The Ashland Police Department announced on Friday that it will be placing an officer in school buildings in the Southern Boone School District at various times during school hours.

"After this last event that occurred in Florida, we decided, 'You know what? We want the community to know that it's very important to us that the kids are safe,'" said Ashland Police Chief Lyn Woolford. "That the parents can go to work and know that they're safe."

Woolford said a different off-duty officer will be present during random hours while school is in session and will be at different buildings throughout the day.

"We don't want to present a plan so that somebody can try to work around the plan," he said.

Right now the school district has one school resource officer from the Boone County Sheriff's Department. He splits his time among the four school buildings.

"Anytime I can get a police officer in our buildings, it's a win-win," said Superintendent Chris Felmlee. "It makes our buildings safer and it also gives our kids a great opportunity to interact positively with law enforcement."

Woolford said the officers will begin stopping by the schools next Tuesday, as there is no school in session on Monday. He said the officers will be in place through the end of the school year and beyond.

"We're going to evaluate as we go along," he said. "Maybe there's a better way to do it so that for next school year we have a better plan, because this is pretty short notice."

This is Americans standing up. Why is it that we have these protections in Federal Buildings and not our schools. This is a State matter and states should have the right to protect their children in school. I'm retired military, would be honored to protect our children.

Absolutely PLT Sarge!!!!! I live in Hawaii one of the most Democratic states in the union. I havent heard anything here in the news other than everything President Trump is fucking negative! It is so fricken pathetic it is sickening!!!!!!!!. The Democrat Leadership here (OR LACK THERE OF LEADERSHIP), under estimate the amount of conservatives that are here. Unfortunately the majority of conservatives and our voices get silenced by them. If truth were to be told and we had an alternative to the progressive news papers and news here the progressive media here would get shut down so hard and so fast they wouldnt know what hit them!!!!! I really wish there was an conservative alternative to the Honolulu Advertiser, but I think who ever tried to build one would be smashed before it ever came to fruition. Why? Because the Democrats here know damn well and good that if a conservative news outlet were to gain a foot hold here they would lose their ass's in every election!!!!! I could go on and on about this pertaining to Hawaii and the progressive leadership here but to what end?

Every school in the nation should set up its own HOTLINE for students to report actions, threats or suspicions.

Classmates spend far more time with these troubled students than anyone else in their lives!

School officials should also be notified when students are diagnosed with depression or are being prescribed SSRI's.

The simple fact that SSRI's have been shown to dramatically increase violent behavior and suicidal thoughts and actions

amongst males between the ages of 15 and 24, is due cause to notify school authorities, in order for them to provide

at least minimal monitoring of these at risk individuals. Such a program may also help to reduce suicides by our nations children!

We expect our schools to provide a safe enviornment, let's make sure that they have the "tools" to do so!

Many cities have crime alert hotlines, and they are effective.

I guess common sense disappears whenever "GUNS!" are mentioned. Why not make sure no gun toting individuals make into a school? That way, there will be no folks hurt in the crossfire, and no teachers killed by the cops when they show up.

Ever tried to enter a Federal Court building, or other Federal facility? You have to pass through a metal detector where at least one cop is stationed. An easy way to secure school buildings is to install air lock type of enclosures at the entrances, with bullet proof glass, cameras and electronic door locks. A cop/security guard/armed school personnel are stationed there while kids arrive for classes, the doors lock after classes start, and no one is admitted until they've identified themselves and staff lets them in. Whenever suspicious type folks show up, the staff can let them into the first door, and lock them in until police arrive. That was suggested here...............but the legislature couldn't find anyone to pay for it and weren't willing to pay for it themselves.

Arming school personnel is a cheap and cowardly action.

What a stupid statement. When you have educators who are willing to take the appropriate classes, becoming proficient in firearms and are able to defend our children in the school environment is hardly 'cheap and cowardly'. Of course statements such as these are to be expected coming from clueless, frightened liberal gun grabbers.

You just couldn't resist putting your own little spin on the issue, could you?

The issue is not "arming teachers", it is about allowing those who sincerely want to, to carry their OWN weapons!

If we entrust our teachers with moulding the minds of our youth, why should we not trust them to protect our youth?
