Being part of the problem is a losing strategy

I understand it's more fun to join the mudslinging instead of sitting on the sidelines, but there are other options. What wonderful examples of selective memory loss we've witnessed in the last few years, what with the tit-for-tat shenanigans in our politics, the sheer volume of death and destruction meted out by American firepower to protect the homeland and all the rest of the crap occupying our attention.

Democrats railed against Republicans for obstructionism, then engaged in obstructionism themselves. Republicans railed against Democrats for changing the rules to facilitate Dem only action, then changed the rules themselves, to facilitate Repub only action. Republicans jeered Presidential executive orders and filed record numbers of law suits over them, then crowed over EO's when a Republican President did the same thing. Republicans derided Democrats for not being able to pass a budget, then failed to pass a budget themselves.

There are those who castigate others for abusive and disparaging language.............using abusive and disparaging language. Some folks claim that their religion is under threat, while steadily threatening other folks religion. Some people decry the obstinate nature of those who disagree with them, while refusing to listen to those they disagree with. I could go on for days, listing all the examples of counterproductive behavior, but what would be the point?

We've all been raised on sayings such as "the meek shall inherit the earth", "love thy neighbor as thyself", "do unto others, what you would have others do unto you" and many other similar philosophies...............but instead of applying them to ourselves..................we demand that others apply them to us. As a Nation, we will never rise above the divisiveness and rancor, as long as we participate in the divisiveness and rancor. Waiting for someone else to make the first move towards "a more perfect Union" - leaves us all wallowing in the morass of our self righteousness.

Fine ideas, but has it ever been different. In the somewhat recent movie with Day-Lewis assuming it's true the language of the debating Senators was as nasty as today's bloggers. Today's Senators are more cordial.
