never fully understood how to tell the difference between male and female birds. I always thought it had to be determined biologically or by medical examination by experts.

Until now.

Below are two birds. Study them closely. See if you can determine which of the two is the female. It CAN be done! Even by one with limited bird watching skills!

I am sure that you believe the female is the one whose beak is always moving, and you may be right. Off season cardinals all look pretty much the same but I learned an easy way to tell males from females. Non breeding season the ones who are always attacking and taking all the food are the males. When breeding season approaches they start bringing food to the female, until the end of breeding season when they go back to being selfish. Behavior is the true indicator of sex, males wamt something-they are nice- otherwise not so nice.

Maybe the female has to keep nagging because the male is NOT LISTENING.Just look at the way he turns away and doesn't make eye contact. She is probably telling him for the tenth time to take out the garbage, you never know.

While I may take most of the food in the refrigerator and pantry, I certainly leave all the wild birdseed for The Sgt. Major.

She has been Blessed.

Perhaps he has heard the same thing umpteen times, over and over, thus doesn't need to hear it again.
