Isaiah chapter 36
Verse 1
Ten years earlier, Shalmaneser was king of Assyria and over a three year period, took the Northern 10 tribes. The nation of Israel was no more. About eight years later, Sennacherib is king of Assyria and took the outer cities of Judea. When he gets to Jerusalem he will encounter a problem.
Verse 2 & 3
Sennacherib sent an ambassador with an army of 185,000. Judea sent 3 ambassadors. At this time, Judea was patriarchal.
Verse 4 - 10
Rabshakeh, the ambassador for Assyria, is trying to inspire fear in the heart of the Judeans. He is using psychological warfare.
Verse 11 & 12
The Judean ambassadors can speak in the Assyrians native tongue. They want to lessen the effect of the psychological warfare. Rabshakeh will have none of this and speaks directly to the Jews.
Verse 13 - 20
The mistake the Assyrians make is not seeing the difference between God and idols. Idols are man-made. But God made us and built this universe.
Thus shall ye say to them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and under these heavens.
Jeremiah 10:11
The countries mentioned form a straight line between Assyria and Jerusalem.
Verse 21 & 22
In most tense situations, nothing is a good thing to do and say. Tearing of clothes is a sign of lamentation.
