As a Christian, I’ve learned two basic tenants re: gender roles in the Body of Christ. First, we are enjoined (as men) to love our wives as Christ loves the Church. If you study the Bible enough to know exactly what this implies, it’s very sobering to realize that, in God’s economy, the man is required to spend his life being the servant of everything that supports his wife.........beyond simply providing material security and safety, her emotional and spiritual needs must be considered as well, and that does not imply the type of support required for a child, but meeting her in everything she gives to the family. The god given discernment, wisdom, and unconditional love that can be made available to the whole family through the wife through the marriage covenant is perfected in that union. The example of Christ willingly sacrificing himself for his bride, namely us (the Church), is the template for a healthy and fulfilling marriage. I have sometimes struggled with the seeming one sidedness of this, until I got a hold of the teaching of influence and authority. That teaching stated the Biblical principal that the powers of influence and authority are symbolized by the head and the neck. The Bible has called the man the head, or the authority, which appears to vest all power in the man. In this concept, the woman is symbolized by the neck, which is the means of turning and providing direction for the head. This is, for me, a great vision of marriage and has given my wife and me a powerful structure for a long and successful marriage.
