Following Makes You A Follower

What defines a follower of Christ? In speaking with my more conservative friends, they tell me ‘doctrine defines who is, and is not, a true follower of Christ.’ I’m not there. You see, if doctrine defines who is, and isn’t, in the club, we dive into some pretty shallow water. Why? Because we need to ask, whose doctrine?

Baptists?
Calvinists?
Catholics?
Orthodox?
Anglican?
Adventists?

Over our history, many church have split over what one groups sees as a truer doctrine.
In my view, doctrine divides, it’s simply part of the core of doctrine; it says, “We got it right, and everyone else is wrong.”

Doctrine falsely implies that anyone who thinks different, has a different view, is not standing on the true doctrine of Christianity.

Doctrine causes one group to discount the other as heretics, false teachers. I believe doctrine is the new law, taking place of the old law. I get it, this is not a teaching the historical church believes is right; for them doctrine is central. Augustine of Hippo said, “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”

Doctrine, in the purist sense, is what a person believes about God. I’m sure today some folks have changed or added to this definition. What we believe about God is extremely important. God does not change, thank the good Lord. His creation is so precise we set our clocks by it. So God’s love for mankind and His plan to offer mankind a way that they can have there sin washed away is very important. Amazingly the only thing that God requires is to recognize that we have sinned against God and place our faith, trust in the one who payed the price for our sins, His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. Enough said.

How very true! Wash away all of the variations of Christian churches and different doctrines and you arrive at what Weaver said.

Congratulations. You just highlighted the age-old weakness of organized religion. Whichever 'doctrine' you pick, you will be identifying yourself as 'the enemy' to all the others. I personally choose not to choose. That's my choice.
