On December 20, 1957 Elvis received his draft notice. In a letter dated December 24th he formally asked for a deferment to finish filming the movie he had already been working on. On December 26, 1957, the Memphis Draft Board granted Elvis a deferment until March 20, 1958 so he could finish filming his movie 'King Creole'.

On Monday, March 24, 1958 at 6:35 AM, Elvis, accompanied by his parents and a group of family and friends, reported to the Memphis Draft Board.

"March 5, 1960. He received his mustering-out check of $109.54 and Elvis Presley, Sergeant E-5 returned to home the life and career he had left behind". E-5 after 2 years?

My older brother met him in Germany, they sang a little bit. He liked gospel music.

Larry, I never understood why the army made Elvis a truck driver, when using him as an entertainer would have made so much more sense.

His choice. He picked his own MOS. He was actually a scout for his armored unit. Mostly drove around in a Jeep.

I made E5 after two years but I had special circumstances. I was in a group of forty-two who formed the International Geophysical Year technical support team and I was the Radar Section Crew Head. We had a Colonel as head, two Captains, two Lieutenants and a Master Sergeant. No SFC's and no Sgt's. (E5) There was a slot available in the TOE and I was promoted to fill it. It was a "volunteer" group and no one else was going to volunteer to go to the Arctic Circle to do the job.

At least he served, unlike the draft dodger who became president in 1993.
