On December 20, 1957 Elvis received his draft notice. In a letter dated December 24th he formally asked for a deferment to finish filming the movie he had already been working on. On December 26, 1957, the Memphis Draft Board granted Elvis a deferment until March 20, 1958 so he could finish filming his movie 'King Creole'.
On Monday, March 24, 1958 at 6:35 AM, Elvis, accompanied by his parents and a group of family and friends, reported to the Memphis Draft Board.

Larry, I never understood why the army made Elvis a truck driver, when using him as an entertainer would have made so much more sense.

His choice. He picked his own MOS. He was actually a scout for his armored unit. Mostly drove around in a Jeep.

I made E5 after two years but I had special circumstances. I was in a group of forty-two who formed the International Geophysical Year technical support team and I was the Radar Section Crew Head. We had a Colonel as head, two Captains, two Lieutenants and a Master Sergeant. No SFC's and no Sgt's. (E5) There was a slot available in the TOE and I was promoted to fill it. It was a "volunteer" group and no one else was going to volunteer to go to the Arctic Circle to do the job.
