A question for discussion.

What do you think is the most effective, woirthwhile form of giving to make the world better ?

Plerase cut the invective and stick to answering the question.

Surprised (perhaps I should not be) that the folks of OPP have not responded forcefully and quickly.

In any case I think the most effective and worthwhile way of giving is to choose something about which one is passionate and give more than just money. Give your time, be an advocate for what you believe to be a good cause, and get others involved. Most big companies will match your donations, some will even give money for your volunteered time as well.

We all tend to think we need to make a big difference on our own, but really it is the multitude of people each giving in small ways that makes the most difference.

Just my honest thoughts.

I am not at all surprised that there has been little reaction here to the question. An extremely high percentage of the folks on OPP seem to be self-absorbed and really very selfish. Giving doesn't seem to be one of their interests, much less a priority.

To prod the discussion along, let's look at a hypothetical choice. If you had the choice of giving an established organization such as Care $200/month or give the same $200/month to someone living in the streets of Bombay, which would be the most effective way to drastically improve someone's the life ?

At least you donate something somewhere. I donate a large amount each month to non-political causes.

Well clearly the $200/month is likely to impact that particular individual's life in a really powerful way. That assumes a certain level of poverty on their part, and that the things that would improve their life are actually available where they live. If their critical need is clean water and none is available, then the $200/month to CARE has the possibility to be grouped with other donations to be able to built a water treatment facility, which would improve more lives.

I tend to think, in the kind of comparison you provided that it depends on the situation as to which strategy makes the biggest difference.
