“The 13th Warrior: Prayers Before Final Battle”

Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan:
“Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things.
This was not among them…
But at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well.
For all we ought to have thought, and have not thought;
all we ought to have said, and have not said;
all we ought to have done, and have not done;
I pray thee God for forgiveness.”

Buliwyf, and others:
“Lo, there do I see my father.
Lo, there do I see my mother and my sisters, and my brothers.
Lo, there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning.
Lo, they do call to me,
they bid me take my place among them in the Halls of Valhalla,
where the brave may live forever.”

A warning? An omen? Both?

An admonition to prepare for our imminent demise, whether from old age, infirmity or strife. Jesus Christ said
"Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."

Can we do less?

I can't thank you enough for this. I lost my brother yesterday and this ode reminded me of him. He was a combat Marine in Viet Nam; wounded three times. He was the bravest, most honorable man I ever knew and I really admired him. This poem lightened my heart a little. When I speak at his eulogy I will recite this. Did I say thanks?

I will mourne your loss as well, there is no comfort I can offer but this prayer;

Dear Lord Jesus,
Hold this brave soul in the palm of your hand, comfort him and his family.

Send angels of protection, love, and comfort to all the service men and women still at war,
bring them home safely and comfort their families.

We ask all our prayers in Jesus' name. Amen.
