An amazing caliber. I shoot an AR 7.62x39. Mostly because I have tremors and won't shoot at anything too far away and the fact that I owned a SKS which I sold, I had the ammo. The 7.62 x 39 is = 30.30. The .308 is 7.62 x51. a lot hotter and where the 39 is a 100 to 200 yard round, the .308 is good out 500-600 yards. As of now it is the main round for our military. that may change as the 6.8 is even more potent and longer ranged. Mike

Already own a HK 308, but just purchased the Armalite ar-10. Have an AR-15 too, among others. Gonna put a high end scope on it and use it for rifle hunting next month. Usually use a bolt action for deer, but this year will go semi-auto. Probably overkill but deer wasn't the reason for the purchase. It was another "just in case" purchase. Can a guy have too many guns? Ask a woman if she has too many shoes.

Nothing wrong with original Eugene Stoner, although have had many a winchester, and a few of the others.

A true AR-10 predates the M-16 and is a pretty rare weapon with under ten thousand made. It was not used by the US military but some were used in the colonial wars by Portugal until they ended in the mid 70s.

Armalite AR-10 ( 7.62 NATO RD. ).

Your post remind's me of Two Firearm's, used by The South African Army, & other Unit's,
the Browning Hi-Power( single action 13 shot semi-auto ), & The venerable FN-.308 NATO SELECT FIRE, INFANTRY RIFLE. Like the AK-47,
these weapon's proved themselves, in Rhodesia, & South Africa's "BUSH WAR" against
Communist Aggression, backed by "RED" CHINA, THE SOVIET UNION, & CASTRO'S CUBA(Based primarily in ANGOLA).

the 6.8 is longer ranged than the .308, really, you might want to recheck that out

Sweetlips, you are absolutely correct. I was thinking the 6.5 creedmoor vs .308. The 6.8 is the long range out shooter of the 5.56. The 308 is a formable round any way we look at it. The 6.5 kicks less and has a better wind bucking bullet. Mike

Creedmoor has 1/4 the barrel life of the 308, expensive to target shoot, mine sits in the safe. .260 is on par and cheaper than the creed. Although I own one, it's not a go to rifle for me. Latest and greatest don't make it the best.

Agree, fps wears a barrel down but unless your burning ammo it's not a big deal. Again I'm using an AR-15 in both 5.56 and 7.62x39. Can't hunt deer in Va. with 5.56 which is good with me. The 7.62x39 is not a long range caliber which suits my ability these days. When younger, with better eyes and steadiness I liked a 7mm bolt that would knock the eye out of a fly at 100 yds. Even with a 3x9 I don't shoot that far anymore except at paper or steel. Mike

Don't know bout VA but here in the land of 11,000 plus lakes, most deer hunting is in the brush. Not too many long range shots, old timers are content with the venerable 30-30 or the 30-06, but you see all kinds of calibers. Didn't have a black gun in 308 so ya know I had to get one. Many of my weapons are safe queens, bought a bunch b4 the last election, just waiting for the next uprising. My go to deer gun has been a WW2 german mauser carbine in 8mm, just love that little thing, hell of a muzzle flash tho. Gonna try the armalite if it shows up in time to get the scope on and sighted. Are you hunting deer this year?

Yes I am. Turkey also. We are in bow season now. Black powder is next and mid Nov. open season. We are heavy wood, brush and swamp here so I mostly use a shotgun with no. 1 buck. Our youngsters still use rifles as they are more agile, sharper eyed and quicker than us grey beards. They also don't kill very much. I hunt with about 40 other folks and families on about 6000 acres of wonderful land divided between ag and wooded, mostly wooded. We have stands spread all over the area and during open season run dogs.

When younger I hunted with an all Black club and was their main deer killer. They couldn't hit a deer to save their lives but could sure hit each other over women. We hunted dogs on Paper Co. land that consisted of swamps and woods. Killed a hell of a lot of deer using # 1 buck. Most of the ones I knew died off and it wasn't safe to hunt with the remainders.

I'm in a great place now. A bunch of great folks who think alike and don't push anything on anyone else. I love that I can take my Granddaughter to a deer stand or out clearing shooting lanes. We have a small (cabins and campers) city with a bathhouse, kitchen and clubhouse to do Thanksgiving etc. I've been blessed. I don't shoot at anything anymore, just take the kids out. My wife won't eat it if I kill it and my son-in-law kills enough for his clan. I like watching the sun come up, the squirrels and turkeys waking up and scampering down from the trees. I love feeling the cool breeze that hits my face as the sun comes up. You know what I'm talking about.

Good luck to you this season and all to come. May all your shots be true and all your quarry not know it was your quarry. Mike
