How this recent incident with tRump and the widow of a fallen hero could have worked out
Here’s the stage: Rep Wilson is with the widow to receive her husband’s body as a longtime family friend. They have just got news that the condition of her husband’s remains means a closed casket. Then they get a surprise call from Trump (not something pre-arranged the Rep could have known about).
Trump is under some pressure to make this overdo call. Perhaps he is a bit tense or maybe resentful he has been more or less forced into this position by the media. Besides that, as tRump said, this is a very difficult thing to do. So maybe his turn of phrase was a bit awkward and the tone seeming insincere. No purposeful intent to be disrespectful. However, emotions are very high on the other end and a phrase that trump said, taken out of a broader context, was misinterpreted. Grief causes an overreaction and the accusation of disrespect.
This is how a decent and understanding person would respond, knowing how deep sorrow can sometimes cause oversensitivity and a distortion of reality. tRump: “I am so sorry if something I said caused you more harm. It was not my intention. Your husband was one of our fallen heroes and the country mourns with you. When you are ready, I would like you to visit the WH so we can talk. Till then, my heart goes out to you in your grief.”
