Way back then. I'm glad they were caught. It's a powerful warning to all employers so watch the want adds get busy.

Think about the risk. Some of that mold was never removed because all of the duct work in the walls would have had to be torn out for sterilization so it was fogged, nothing more.

And people wondered why patients became so ill with respiratory problems there. Thal all was around the time the union president was arrested for embezzling. That one was a real crazy deal.

My Hubby had to go back to have the battery replaced in his pacemaker, the summer before he passed away. I DEMANDED he be put on People's CHOICE so he could go to a different Dr. and Hospital. His Cardiologist got him onto it so he would NOT have to go back into Birmingham Hospital, but they SURE DRAGGED their butts giving the new Dr. his records!!! Had to call and DEMAND them several times!!!

You have no idea how it does my heart GOOD to hear that the Union Pres. was ARRESTED. HOPEFULLY a few more will be arrested also. Along with a few SO-CALLED Dr.s in the VA!!! His Cardiologist was GREAT, but I would not give a plug nickel for any of the rest of them there. Birmingham OR Montgomery!! His Cardiologist was in Montgomery, and as far as I am concerned, the ONLY one that actually knows what he is doing!!!

Too bad Birmingham wasn't shut down. If it weren't for the UAB Dr.s coming in there to do the surgeries, they would be TOTALLY WORTHLESS as a hospital!!!

The path lab director was from UAB. He drew a good salary to oversee the B'ham VA path lab yet he spent on average 4--6 hours/month at the VA and I don't believe he ever set foot in the lab.

That place was a microcosm of DC. Hopefully it has improved since I left, but I doubt it.

I can believe that. That place was SO MIS/RUN that I could have run it 10 times better, in my SPARE TIME!!! That place was a NIGHTMARE!!! Actually a SERIES of NIGHTMARES!!!

We had a good Oncologist from UAB, but he can only do so much. It was the nurses that weren't doing their jobs that caused my husband to wind up getting MRSA and having to be kept comatose for 3 mos there from a SIMPLE surgery that was SUPPOSED to get him home in 4 days!!! And THAT was when all of his problems started!! He had been a VERY healthy man before that!!! He weighed 229 when he went in, and 146 when he came out 3 mos later!!!

In my opinion that is criminal neglect.

There are other examples of gross negligence there that I know of. On all levels of employment, including cafeteria. One call to the AG, if taken seriously, would have closed it. I hope it has improved in the intervening years. I believe the new union leadership was an improvement.

I did not know then what my options were. I didn't have a computer at the time, and didn't know who to talk to!! I DID do a lot of screaming at the VA, DEMANDING that they do this or do that, w/regard to Hubby. Finally Christmas Day I went in and he said, "I am going home today" I said "Did they release you?" He said, "They will as soon as you call the Dr. and tell him"! Which I did. I told his Dr. I could give him better care at home than he was getting in ICU, he released him and I brought him home Christmas Day on a Wound-Vac They showed me how to change his Wound, which I had to teach to the nurses that came out from Alacare. ( They had never seen a Wound-Vac.) We had a couple of pitfalls, but handled them and I believe he recovered MUCH faster than he would have in there. Every time we went in after that for a checkup with his Oncologist, Dr. Wang would shake his head and say, I can't believe he is still alive!!! The one time I told him, that's because I did my job, which the nurses in here, WEREN'T!!
