Like I said I am sick of these blame America first clowns. We are criminals for bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but the Japanese get a mulligan for killing millions of innocent civilians. No mention is ever made of the Communists purges in the old USSR, or in China, or in Cambodia, or the ongoing genocide in Africa.
Japan's treatment of military prisoners although despicable, might even be explained away. The robbing, torturing, raping and murdering of millions of civilians is a different matter.

Loki: I take exeption to the idea that the U.S. committed a crime by using atomic weapons,

this must be your point because you made no mention of the most deadly bombing raids in history.

February 13-14, 1945, 800 Allied bombers dropped more than 3,400 tons of explosives

the city of Dresden, Germany. The firestorm created by the two days of bombing

set the city burning for many more days. Estimates of 35,000 to 135,000 civilians killed.

March 9, 1945: Three hundred B29 bombers dropped nearly half a million cylinders of napalm

and petroleum jelly on the most densely populated areas of Tokyo.

The firestorms killed about 100,000 civilians and wiped out about half of the city.

Make no mistake about it; the 20th Century was a century of TOTAL WAR! As Douhet, Trenchard, and our own Billy Mitchell claimed, in the next war civilian populations would not be immune from aerial attack. They would be every bit a target as the soldier on the battlefield. The one military item we had that the others did not was the Norden bombsight. This allowed us to bomb with "precision" during daylight hours. The RAF, who preferred going at night due to heavy losses incurred during daylight hours, used what amounted to a "fixed angle" method of dropping.( We used it in the B-52 as an "emergency" backup should our radar capability be damaged) They had no Nordens...nor did the Krauts or Nips.

As I noted on another thread months ago, I may be the only poster on the board who ever talked to an individual (Gen Ira Eaker) who was present at the WH when Truman made the decision to drop the bomb. I know many of you read it as I received several PMs on the subject so I won't repeat it.

As far as Dresden, Tokyo, Yokahama , etc. goes..."you reap what you sow."

I take exception to the idea that the US committed a crime by giving the Japanese a sample of what they had been dishing out against unarmed civilians and helpless prisoners for years.
You could make the point that the A bombs were actually humanitarian, since they prevented the bloodbath that would have occurred had we invaded the Japanese mainland.

Thanks for putting the truth out there. My father worked with a man who had survived the Battan death march. Dale Solsberg had to sleep on the floor as his back was very messed up from the Japanese beating him acroos the back with a pipe. I also worked with a man who spent WW2 on the islands picking up the bodys of our soldiers that had been decomposing while we were unable to retrieve them.

I have an uncle who survived the Bataan Death March and 3 years undergound in a Jap copper mine. Returned to the US after the war weighing 85 lbs for months of rehab. Actually was able to finish his 20 in the Army and retired. Passed away in 1976.

Amen. And the best thing that could have happened. The Japanese people are not the horrible creatures depicted, only
a few of them, just as not all Germans were monsters.
We've put both countries in a good place. Merkel has sort of messed around in Germany.

Being a history buff, you hit the nail squarely on the head. I believe the atomic bomb also saved thousands of lives by bringing the war to a quicker conclusion. A lot of American soldiers would have perished if we had to invade the nation of Japan, itself.
