My guys will not start to eat their food until I say Grace. It did not start out that way. It began after I had to kennel them for a week.
First day home and obviously very appreciative of their home, they sat by their dinner bowls and did not eat. I tried our family grace and they looked up at me and then went immediately to eat. That was five years ago and it is still the same today.

Thats amazing. It was the signal to them that all was right with the world again. My puppy may take awhile to get to that point, he eats anything vaguely resembling food. June bugs , rocks, books... My older dog came home with what appeared to be the spine of a deer, we have a lot of them here, and coyotes to leave a trail of parts. Anyway Leif wanted this disgusting morsel in the worst way, so I spent a chunk of this morning, chasing down Bear to take his treasure.

Dogs do rock! But the only dog I would live with is a Borzoi. Was given a Saluki (sells at $2,000) because I thought it would be similar to a Borzoi. It wasn't and I returned it. The Saluki owner, after hearing my praise for the Borzoi, adopted one (they both belong to the coursing family). He's been thrilled. I am basically a cat person and what I enjoyed with that dog is that it "thought" like a cat. Very aware of its dignity. She never stole anything from the table until I enjoyed a pizza with my Dad and he gave her some while he was eating. After that, no sandwich was safe on the table. She was tall enough to just "walk by" the table and the sandwich would be gone.

Alicia, you brought back memories of our female Tundra Wolf (pure white, big thick ears, dark dark almond eyes, pink inside side of ears, pink nails, and very girly antics. She was a about 9 months old and each monthly pay check I would treat my wife and I to a butchers oversized Porterhouse steaks(about 24+ ounces each) for home BBQ. After seasoning the steaks, leaving them on the kitchen counter to come to room temp I left them to change clothes and a few chores . Upon returning about 20 min later upon returning a steak was missing, immediately I looked for Nana (Nanook ) only to see her sleeping soundly on her bed, leaving me with question marks. Looked everywhere for evidence and not so much as a bone, and my wif had no knowledge. I was pretty sure Nana was the culprit, so left and returned with another steak, only to find the second one now missing, but this time caught her in the act. Funny when you said a sandwich would go missing and in the case of Nana, a San which would be picked up in one pass of the tongue, followed by a gulp.

Something I stumbled on to about 13 years ago, my children were young, so I was home. All the shops up here are full of rustic furniture and frames featuring birchbark. So I refinished a big old mirror we had, was really just playing. Anyway it sold for $600, so I was like , wow that was easy....At this point I have made thousands of frames, valances, signs and refinished a hundred plus pieces of furniture. Anyway, my work is dependant on my ability to find materials, all my bark is from dead trees. My dogs are very important, as company and protection
in the woods, they are my partners.

From what Newfie breeders say the Landseers have a different temperament from the Blacks and Bronze ones.

Well this is my first Newfie. So far he has shown to be very sweet, but also headstrong. If Leif doesnt want to go for a walk he becomes a sandbag, and at 3 months is just getting to that point that he is difficult to lift. We live on a quiet dead end so I just walk away, then he debates whether he wants to be left behind, so in the end I win. I am being very firm about limits now, so that I dont have a 150lb monster on my hands. Pray for me. .Mostly it has been fun.

Hi Himmler, I'd hate to be your dog. It figures this is the way you would be. I'm glad I don't know you personally. You are a disgusting human if I would even call you human. Mike

I once had a Borzoi Hound (Russian Wolf Hound) and played with her by asking her what she would do for a goodie. At first she went through her usual and well-known 3 or 4 antics but, when she repeated one, I would tell her that she had already done that and please show me another. This would go on with her either creating new movements or doing variations on one before. She would never get her goodie unless she came up with a new version. How does your pet stand up to this? I'd truly like to hear of your experiences and, perhaps, give you ideas for further play with your pets.

That dog, for some reason, never needed to be trained for outside. She just could not allow herself to make any type of mess in the house - even to regurgitate. Although there was a run in the back yard, I just let her out by herself. One day, my neighbor told me that Azuka always went onto her property to relieve herself. Naturally I had to collect it all.

The only "trick" I ever trained her for was to Stay. I once left her with a building guard because I thought she might get upset in an elevator. when I returned I asked how she did. The guard told me that he would have had to shove her in order to get her to move.

I don't know whether I mentioned this before, but I once decided to teach her to fetch. Had a friend visit with his dog who would chase anything thrown. I had her watch him for a time and then threw a stick and asked her to retrieve it. She did it rather reluctantly and, after much praise, I threw it again. She looked at it and then at me as if to say, "I just gave it to you. Why are you throwing it away again?" She would never repeat the action. No more normal dog tricks after that. One more thing: I never used the word "heel" but instead asked her to "walk like a lady."
