I agree with you on this; the nuclear waste disposal/re-constitution business is problematic. However, since the degraded radioactivity is of about the same level as that found in some places naturally, well, returning that stuff to the earth seems like a plausible solution. Dumping the stuff into the ocean , down deed defunct wells, or even dropping it off in heaps in the deserts of uninhabited, inhospitable countries might do.
It is a problem, but nothing like the problem of the nation being weakened by power hunger. We're between the devil and the deep blue in that part of the story.
I will try to chase down France's and GB's disposal technologies.. we might learn something there.
