This is the one that bothers me the most.
There is no more "we" in this country. There are, for the rabid right, "us" (meaning them) and the "not human beings."
I'm no fan of Obama, but the hatred spewed at the President is without president. Not even Nixon got this much invective.
And the tenuous grasp on reality-the outright lies and far-fetched paranoid fantasies, are beyond the realm of sanity.
And it will go on-it started with Carter and the "malaise" speech he never made. It was ratcheted up with Clinton and his "murdering" of Vince Foster. A vast right-wing conspiracy.
Now it's been perfected with Obama. And it will follow for anybody from the Democrat Party who is elected to the White House. They now know that the power doesn't lie with the majority-an indoctrinated minority can effectively stop government in it's tracks.
Today, a bill in the Senate to extend unemployment benefits was defeated not because it couldn't garner the 50 votes needed for a majority to end debate. The Republican evoked cloture, effectively requiring a super-majority of 60 to end the debate.
One cloture and the filibuster were rare occurrences-only for the vote son final, large scale legislation. But the Senate GOP now requires a super-majority for even the debate and the end of debate-virtually everything.
Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell even filibustered his own bill when it looked as though it might pass-something he didn't want. It's the first time since the filibuster was introduced in 1837 that a Senator had filibustered his own bill.
Now we have an obviously disturbed person calling people with whom he disagrees "not human beings." For once, the comparison to the Nazis may be valid.
