From what I know about The Duke, he was an incredibly good man, even if he was a Republican.
An interesting note: He spoke fluent Spanish, and ll three of his wives were of Hispanic descent.

He tried repeatedly to enlist in WWII, and was threatened with a lawsuit by Columbia pictures if he did so. Due to his age and some injuries sustained as a football player and while doing some of his own stunts, he might not have been accepted anyway.
