For a mature people, love should be replaced by respect: and respect for yourself will necessarily complete itself in respect for others.

For an adult, love can be stifling, even suffocating, and oppressive/repressive. (See "Of Mice and Matriarchies": http://www.onepoliticalplaza.com/t-60559-1.html ---and remember that a mother's love for her children is sacrificial.)

But I ask you, can a decadent or degraded (by Socialism or the welfare state) people ever respect themselves? And if not, how can they respect others?

The greatest of all gifts is love. Nothing can ever substitute or be greater than love, Godly love. When we love God first, above all else, God returns a love to you that will enable you to love beyond your normal capacity and understanding. I've been working on this for much my adult life and here, at the end of my life, I've feel I've barely made any progress. But I keep trying. I'm not discouraged.
