Actually, the debt died with him. He has family, but they were no longer in contact with him. I really miss him. He could be a cantankerous ass sometimes, but we looked out for each other. He died about a month ago from copd. My only friends now are online, mostly on this site.

This has to be one of the saddest posts I've read.

I'm sorry to hear your friend died. How are you holding up??

As far as your not paying it back being a sin or not really depends, given God knows the intentions of your heart was to pay it back, and given you can't under the circumstances, I don't believe it would be a sin.

From my perspective I've had people 'borrow money, with the agreement they would pay it back', well, I know these folks pretty well, and I know their financial situation is such that they are not in a place to pay back the money as they 'said' they would. So, I didn't look at it as a 'loan' but as a gift, I was able to give them. Sometimes, the way we work it out given their financial situation it's more--Okay, I'll give you the money..and you can come over next week and mow my yard or help me do this around the house, thus an advance on future work. They don't feel the burden of 'owing someone something, and they feel they 'earned' the money and it wasn't 'just handed to them' where they feel 'helpless', and my husband typically hands them a little more money when they are done with the work, yes, even knowing they had already been 'paid' before the work was done. So he writes off their debt, and pays them a tip..lol

At the same time, in the past I have 'borrowed money' with the full intent of paying it back, and when I've gone to 'pay it back' they've refused to take the money, but the attempt was made to pay it back.

His dying was a surprise. I mean, he was going downhill for the longest time. He had been to the emergency countless times, but they refilled his meds and released him, and he seemed to do OK for a while. I knew he was gonna die soon. I just didn't expect it that soon.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss. I know it's difficult losing a friend, even when it's 'expected' because of an illness-- it's still too soon.

However, you didn't answer the most important question, How are YOU doing? How are YOU holding up since his death? Given he was one of your only friends, that has to be pretty hard on you. Have you had an opportunity or even taken the opportunity to really mourn the loss of your friend? Or have you pushed those feelings aside?

It's not the first time it's happened to me. Believe it or not, you get used to it. You deal with it, then move on with your life. I've never been too emotional. Not sure why. When my mother died, it hurt. But I didn't cry much. I tend to keep it inside. That's just the way I am. But to answer your question, I'm doing OK.

He didn't have any heirs. I don't know of any relatives he had, or how to contact them. So how am I supposed to pay them?

I don't think that will work out. He was a good friend, but I really don't think he was a Christian. I hope I'm wrong about that. So unless you're going to Hell...
