Dr. Evil Loc: In Your Face

After a long and futile search for a quality puppy, I have decided on a long haired German Shepherd. He comes from a breeder near Minneapolis. I have his pic as my avatar but today he comes home. Has a sibling out of the same father in Detroit law enforcement. His handle will be Mojo. Probably some sleepless nights coming but I'm looking forward to it. My thoughts are search and rescue or a therapy dog.

nice well i always do this for potty training let him out 10 to 15 minutes after eating set a exact schedule when he eats then 10 to 15 minutes let him out
he should go to the bathroom then cause the pressure from new food will make him want to go & it is good to let him out for every hour for drinking if you set a schedule it will be easier & wear him out before bed that will help to sleep good ..

Thanks, have had German Shepherds for most of my life, spent the last week chain link fencing my new yard. There will be absolute safety for him and me. He will have no cold or hot days outdoors. He will have the life of Riley. Light training begins today.

You may want to invest in one of those shock fences one day. My fence was just fine for Peaches until one day she figured out she could jump right over it. Fortunately, when I realized she was gone, she was just messing around in some woods near the house where I still take her to walk.

Very handsome puppy.
Out of curiosity, why did you choose a long haired GSD rather than the short haired GSD out of Check and other working lines? I would never recommend a show bred GSD but the working lines are great dogs as are the Belgian Malinois and Tervurens . One of "our boys" trains search and rescue dogs and cadaver dogs. He would suggest you not train for cadaver work as the dogs become easily depressed and stop working altogether. We have trained and owned Cane Corsos for therapy work for years, working with kids, also trained Airedales and now a Welsh Terrier for the same kind of work. It can be frustrating but very rewarding. Hope he has good sound breeding behind him. Remember, if you are going to get him neutered WAIT UNTIL HE IS AT LEAST 2 YEARS. The bone deformity problems they are discovering in dogs neutered before then are often crippling.

Very handsome puppy. br Out of curiosity, why did... (show quote)

This is a straight back working lines dog. Hips are excellent ofa on parents and DM negative. Grandfather came direct from Germany at a $5000 price tag. My last dog was a rescued long hair belgian shepherd, sadly he had DM and I had to put him down last christmas, very sad day, guess I just like the looks of the longcoats, 2 of the dogs from this breeder are in police forces so he should be a fine dog.

He really sound as if he will be a great dog and you made a great choice. Make sure you post photos as he grows up. Maybe a thread dedicated to your puppy or one where others can post photos of their puppies.

Wow, hes beautiful! I am also getting a new buddy, a newfy but he was just born, so towards the end of July. It almost like expectig a baby. New family, may you have many wonderful years together. I wonder if conservatives are more likely to be dog people, as a political site, I keep geting into dog discussions. They should create a new category, Dog Lovers Only.
