Because in this nation religions enjoy certain protections and benefits and I don't want them extended to Islam.

I doubt that he would be Islamic and homosexual as well as those two don't mix very well. I would think that he would have difficulty finding an Islam mosque and imam that would go along with the practice and still hold true to the Quran and the Hadith.
