Try this chart When Obama took office in 2009 there was a $1.3 trillion deficit on the desk of the oval office and the biggest recession since the great depression of the 1930's over a trillion dollars of consumer spending had disappeared as the public no longer had home equity as a piggy bank to be tapped. The deficit rose $100 billion in 2016 due to a massive tax package enacted in Dec on 2015 which extended a series of tax breaks for businesses and individuals at a cost of$650 billion over 10 years
