You asked the question and I offer you a answer that you will not particularly like but it's fact. There is only one way to close the gap between the wealthy and the lesser wealthy. I state it that way since we are the greatest country on Earth and enjoy the best living conditions in the known world. Now, having said that there is only one way to narrow the gap and that is to take advantage of the opportunities this great nation offers you and others fortunate enough to live here. You will never get rich working for someone else unless its a growing company and you have stock options or your fortunate enough and educated enough to climb the corporate ladder to higher paying positions. If your fortunate enough to fall into one of those categories, then great. For the others who are less fortunate one would ask where do I start, I say it doesn't matter. Just get off your ass and start somewhere, work harder than everyone else around you and do not settle for anything short of excellence in the performance of your duties. Obviously this applies to people in the private sector. As I said the only thing you have working for you is opportunity and self worth. The answer is right in front of you but you have to be smart enough to know where to start; anything else is settling for wages making a decent living and living what was the American dream. That's not all bad but it doesn't close the gap.You asked what we can do as a country to close the gap. It is not the country's duty to close the gap its a individuals responsibility to him/herself to decide whether or not you want to put the effort into joining the wealthy class because the OPPORTUNITY is always there. Anything else would be redistribution and that's been proven not to work numerous times throughout history. Like Henry Ford said if you want a example of how well the government will take care of you just look at the American Indians.

Well spoken and full of truth. It's not up to the government to redistribute wealth. It's up to the individual to get up off his/her ass and go to work. If you're gonna be a burger flipper then be the best burger flipper you can be. You'll then be promoted to trainer. Be the best trainer you can be and then you can make store manager. Be the best store manager you can be, work hard and save your money then you can buy a franchise and work twice as hard as you ever have because it's your money on the line. That's called self respect and you'll also earn the respect of those who work for you because they'll know that you started as a burger flipper. If you don't have the initiative or the desire to do better then just stay a burger flipper but don't bitch about how ANYONE with just a little ambition passes you up for promotion. It's up to you, no one else. That's a concept the liberals don't seem to be able to understand. You alone are responsible for your position in life. No one else. Not the government. Take advantage of all the opportunities provided and work hard and you'll make it.

All of the conservatard war hawks should want to see the tax rates return to the WWII level. Would certainly slow the rate of theft of the fat cats.
Too bad the conservatard idiots are so hate filled, they can't see how they are being screwed, and the really funny thing is that none of conservatard posters will ever be wealthy enough to pay the top tax rate. Idiots

Stymie, If you had to put me in a pigeonhole, I guess that you could call me a "Rockefeller Republican". I agree with most of what you say. However, I think that the Country has been meaningfully impacted by the Law Of Unintended Consequences. Many of our fiscal and social problems have been caused by "progress"; automation, nuclear , medicinal etc. These are serious and ongoing problems. I wish that this blog would concentrate on finding solutions rather than pointing fingers.

That's a heck of a story, but it's a story of what being a real American is all about. I worked several years for other people doing factory work, truck driving, and construction. After getting sick and tired of having to work by someone else rules, I had a chance to buy a small business from a guy who retired and now I'm the boss. My wife worked in retail and she also was sick of the same thing I was, so she quit her job. My business is run by my wife and I, and even though we're far from rich, we are a lot happier working for ourselves. Wealth is not always about money, it's about personal happiness. If a person is working in a job they don't like, or their unemployed, it's up to them to make a change. Either look for a different career or go into business for yourself. If a person sits around all day and whines about how bad their life is and does nothing about it, their life will always suck. I once was told "it's better to try something and fail rather than do nothing and succeed." That has always stuck with me.

I know the hardships I endured getting to where I am today makes me more appreciated and value it much more than if it'd all been given to me.

There is no such thing as "Equality." Some people are fortunate to be born with money. Others are born with high intelligence, and then make their own money. Some people are born with good looks, and that alone gives them some advantage in society. Other people are born poor or born with low IQ, or are born ugly. Only in the Communistic mind should all people be "equal." The producers are expected to give their earnings to the lazy and stupid, which makes the lazy and stupid even more lazy and more stupid. We all know a few people like that. Why the bleeding heart Liberals and Socialists believe that all people are supposed to be "equal" is beyond logical thinking. Hey, if you have at least average intelligence, and work hard, you can succeed. Unfortunately, too many idiots want the government to force "equality" by way of Socialism. The end result is that everyone in society will suffer. Who wants to work hard and then be taxed to pay for some lazy idiot who damands "equality?"

Very well-stated!!! Unless you've earned what you have you cannot appreciate its value.

Maybe that's why most welfarers turn their residences and neighborhoods to slums.

I hesitate to get into particulars due the shear size and complexity of our nation. The problems are many and growing exponentially under Obama's leadership. You are correct in that a lot of our problems are unintended consequences of progress. However, progress and new innovations are good things. We are, or have been in the past, a unique nation that had a belief system that stimulated great ideas and the entrepreneurial spirit. As I said earlier all you need is opportunity. That, for the moment, is missing due to the fundamental changing of our nation but could be reclaimed quickly with the proper leadership. My approach to business in the past has been and I quote " Keep it simple stupid " That way most people can understand. Now, How do we do that? The key to opportunity is providing jobs. The key to providing jobs is give the Corporations incentive to return their money to the U.S. and invest. You do that by simply lowering the corporate tax structure. Next you stop the crippling effect of the mountains of new regulations heaped on every aspect of our economy daily by our community organizer. Turn the greedy capitalist dogs loose not to destroy Mother Earth but simply relax the regulation stranglehold and kill ACA because it deters expansion. I challenge anyone on this site to explain all that is in Obamacare. Believe it or not but all successful businesses have a long range [10 year] and short range [5 year ] business plan. How in the hell do you plan for anything when you have no clear foundation i.e.. government structure to build or plan on. You can't. This my comrades is the bottom line. This is all fundamentals but that's what we are missing with this President, fundamentals and leadership. For those of you that say; "see you need the government you can't do it alone", I say no we need the government to define the rules we have to play by and get out of the way. We do that and tap the energy potential laying dormant in this country and the race is on. Put the 90 million people back to work and watch our deficit fall.

UR -ignorance has preceded you, it requires knowledge to perceive it and therefore he that can perceive it; hath it not.
UR -childish diatribe resonates with it, as well as a confused
grasp of what is reality.
Learn something before 'throwing up' at sites, regurgitating misunderstood misinformation. Not only does it smell bad, U couldn't even compost what you wrote to get anything to grow from it.

Excellent comment Stymie. If only our leaders would think this way we could quickly heal our nation.

Well, since he's been on here three days longer than you and has only 20 posts in that time I'll leave it up to you to decide. Probably takes him quite a while to think anything up much less think it through. In a way I'm kinda glad it doesn't make any sense.
