Meeting the greatest NFL running back of all time

To all my OPP friends who may or may not be Cleveland Browns fans (I'll forgive you AuntiE for being a Ravens fan)... today I had the honor of shaking the hand and talking briefly with the greatest NFL running back of all time…JIM BROWN. I was lucky enough to sit next to him on our flight back from Jacksonville after last Sunday’s game. It was quite a thrill meeting one of my childhood heroes.

I remember Barry Sanders, the first to have five 1,500-yard rushing seasons and the only back to do so in four consecutive seasons (1994-1997) but his dad could not get himself to congratulate him but only to say something like he was not as good as Jim Brown.

Ditto. I was just a bit too young to see him play live, I was a Walter payton fan myself but congrats on the experience. What an honor

His sweetness. Brown had more power. Payton had the speed and the moves. Both were simply outstanding. I'm torn.

I had a similar experience once. We are Boston Celtics fans. It was still a great honor for us to be seated at the same table with Wes Unseld some years ago.

Would it not be nice to have more pro athletes who had the same type of dignity as some of our previous well known athletes?

I used to love watching Walter play. He looked good even when he lost yards.

One anecdote about Jim Brown that I'm fond of is that after a particularly tough run he would slowly get up and limp back to the huddle like he was hurt. While in the huddle, he would tell the quarterback to give him the ball and he would proceed to make a big gain. Meeting him brought back some great childhood memories of growing up in Cleveland, playing football in our neighborhood, and pretending to be Jim Brown.

I often look back at those days . Free of worry and stress. Now I worry more than ever for my kids and my 11 Grand-kids. Surely God has a plan .

I too was a Jim Brown fan. He was one of the toughest guys to tackle ever. He would often get caught at the line of scrimmage and drag 2 or guys for 4 or 5 yards. A true old fashioned power fullback.

Being a Buckeye by birth, as a kid, my favorite pro football team was the Browns. I remember watching Jim Brown drag anyone, from defensive linemen, to linebackers, to safeties, several yards before being tackled to the ground. I also remember him faking linebackers and defensive backs out of their jockstraps as he ran the ball down the middle of the field. I, too, believe him to be the greatest professional football player of all time. I'm envious of your being able to spend time, talking to him while on the flight.

Sorry, AuntieE, but on Ray Lewis' "best day," I think Jim Brown could run up Ray Lewis' chest, dance on his head for 5 minutes, run down his backside and score a touchdown; all before Lewis would know that J.B. was even on the field. That's just how good Jim Brown was. 8-)
