Is there any issue that we come across in our daily discourse that we could truly address with an open unbiased mind?

No, I don't think so. People like to think they have open minds - right up to the point that someone gouges a tender spot. Then the open mind snaps shut. Even when we listen to all sides, I think we can adapt new thinking to a point, but we do so without having a totally open mind. That new point must get with what we already believe. These are merely my thoughts. I haven't a clue as to a truely unbiased mind. I can only speak for my mind, and it is biased.

I think it is possible to have an open mind... not necessarily on every subject, but in general, it is possible. A truly unbiased mind would be an empty one... all of our experience, research and training create parameters in how we think about issues that come before us. However, if one is aware of these biases, and can withhold immediate judgement on an issue in order to consider other data, then an open mind is possible.

One has to consider biases in light of consequences also - as the initial judgement might be quite altered. If I give you a choice between $10 or $100 in cash... very few would opine that they have sufficient money that they would settle for the $10. But if it were qualified to say that you get $10 and the respect of your family OR $100 and lose a family member, it is judged in a whole different light.

Well said. It is very difficult be "open minded". I think it admirable to be willing to learn. It is easy to say "I don't know everything" but to act like it is not so easy.

Truth has only one path with many forks.

Yes, everything--and if not, truth is a joke.

We live in a world where truth, assumption, bias, along with ignorance defines who we are. We talk about what we know and what we don't know we embellish with what we think is right. I guess the bottom line is take it all in stride.

Most people wouldn't know the truth if it came up to them and slapped them in the face. There is no truth in this world anymore. Everybody is playing the game of one up man ship.

I agree that it is very hard to know, but don't give up on mankind in "knowing"...You know that there is no truth, so you do know..I know that it is very hard to discern, so I do know...See what I mean? Its hard to explain here...

I disagree. When the truth slaps me in the face it gets my attention. The problem is that what you consider to be the truth is not the truth to me. So, this sends me on a journey, to discover what I will accept as the truth. I have been on many journeys on OPP, and have learned a lot. I have also encountered a lot of out right untruths.

Kudos!!!!! That is what open minds ARE. Willing to hear all, research all, and make a decision based on what you find the truth to be. Putting total trust in what others tell you can be a folly, no matter WHO those others may be.
