Laughing matters: The avid golfer

There was a preacher who was a avid golfer. Every chance he got, he could be found on the golf course, swinging away. It was an obsession.

One Sunday was a picture perfect day for golfing. The sun was out, no clouds in the sky, and the temperature was just right.

The preacher was in a quandry as to what to do, and shortly, the urge to play golf overcame him.

He called an assistant to tell him that he was sick and could not do church, packed the car up, and drove three hours to a golf course where no one would recognize him. Happily, he began to play the course.

An angel up above was watching the preacher and was quite perturbed. He went to God and said, "Look at the preacher. He should be punished for what he is doing."

God nodded in agreement. The preacher teed up on the first hole. He swung at the ball, and it sailed effortlessly through the air and landed right in the cup, three hundred and fifty yards away. A picture-perfect hole-in-one. He was amazed and excited.

The angel was a little shocked. He turned to God and said, "Begging Your pardon, but I thought You were going to punish him?!"

God smiled. "I did...who is he going to tell about it?"

That would pose quite a dilemma wouldn't it?

It would appear that the best time for a hole-in-one is on a weekday afternoon or Saturday.

Your days work for preachers but how about the rest of us?

I say playing everyday increases one's chances for an ace!

Wouldn't it depend on who is dealing?

Yes, and he would need an 'ace' in the hole to make his day noteworthy!

In the 'hole' yes, but not up his sleeve.

I played every day for at least 5 months a year in the late 1970s and didn't ever see a hole in one. The closest I ever came was about 1 ft. from the hole on one that was 320 yards and you couldn't see the green from the tee.

I once stepped in one, does that count?

I've only had one, Oldroy. The picture of the hole and a plaque presented to me by my playing partners adorns my den, to this day. It was a par 3 of 153 yards. I used a 7 iron, smoothly struck, and luckily,,,went it! It was a proud day in my life.

A note here: One of those playing partners followed me, and changed his club to the 7 after my ace. He stopped 6 inches short of the hole!

A hole in one is like bowling a 300 game. I have had the luck over 45 years of playing golf to have had two holes in one. It is a very nerve racking experience as you pick the ball out of the hole - I shook so bad I could barely write a "one" on the score card. I have witnessed two aces in my life and even seeing someone else drop one in is very exciting. An ace is a rare combination of luck and skill - which one is the most important depends on your point of view.

You are either twice as good, or twice as lucky as I!
