So many here are old people so must have heard Andy Griffith do this little thing that I find so hilarious. He describes a football game in a way that few could do as well from the standpoint of a boy who was headed for a tent meeting and got caught in the crowd going to a football game.

I first heard this thing in the early 50s and it is an excellent example of how funny the comedians of that time could bring on the kinds of laughter he did without using the kind of language those of today use.

Phil Harris was so good and sometimes very funny. In this one he describes the Darktown Poker Club and old Bill Jackson who had tired of losing since joining that club.

Another of Phil Harris's songs of the period was "The Preacher and the Bear" and here it is. Things were so much fun back in the late 40s when we hadn't divided as a nation, yet.

Back there in the early 50s some of we of the clown variety got ourselves in trouble in classes by doing Andy Griffith's so funny things in college classes. When he did his thing about Romeo and Juliette the timing was so good. In a sophomore English class we were reading that play aloud daily and some of us agreed that when the balcony scene came on the pea vine would come into play. Who got to be Romeo that day? Why of course the one most likely to do the trick and when Juliette said "Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou" I answered as I was supposed to do with "Rightcheer on the pea vine" and the place nearly exploded. The professor was an older woman who didn't mind some game playing and she laughed as hard as anyone.

These old comedians really cracked me up. Red Skeleton especially cracked me up, but so did Andy Griffith. Bob Hope was another that could bring down the house. It's a shame that their craft has been lost and that comedians think the only way to be funny is to use 4 letter words now days. I heard a new comedian on HBO that really got down in the gutter and I just couldn't stand to listen to her. And to think these people think they are funny these days. I'll take the old comedians any day of the week. Even Jack Benny was funnier then any of the new ones I caught on HBO that night. He had class and knew how to make people laugh with just a look. Lots see these new people do that.

I mentioned Rochester as Jack Benny's butler yesterday to my 65 year old wife and she just didn't remember that man.

We got so much fun out of playing those Andy Griffith things on juke boxes back then and few people took umbrage at us for doing it.

I think that old gal knew she was in trouble the day we read the Balcony Scene from Romeo and Juliet but it was my turn to be Romeo. I kept her in stitches most of the time about things like that.

I recall this quite vividly. It was one of the funniest things I had ever heard, and still is.

Did you listen to any of my offerings of Phil Harris? I loved him for some reason but Deacon Andy was very funny, even after he became sheriff Andy.

Not so hot for me because I just can't get back to real life once I get there. You are very right.

Yes, and the walk is always pleasant because it is of your own choosing. These comedians mentioned were great. It is one of the reasons I think Seinfeld did so well for himself and his series. He never got into gutter language, and found humor in the most common, everyday things.

'What is was, was football' is up there with 'Who's on 1st' and other great skits/routines from the past. I never tire of them!

Here Abbott and Costello are in "Who's on First".

We used to go to Abbott and Costello movies and my brother would start coughing from laughing so much and would leave the theater so hoarse he couldn't talk for a while.

That one has no peer, although 'What is was, was football comes in a close second, IMHO.

My Granddaughter, Lauren, who plays for the University of Texas softball team, saw this for the first time a while back at my home, and was laughing hysterically from the moment Lou asked "Who's on 1st?" Before it was over, she was rolling all over her chair, giggling like a schoolgirl. I don't think she was playing to Grandpa, either.

Quality material works with all generations.
