Fear Not, for the LORD thy God, will neither fail thee, nor forsake thee

"Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, He it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."(Deuteronomy 31:6)

The promise that God will never leave or forsake His people occurs often in Scripture.

And we can rejoice today in this same wonderful promise. "He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me" (Hebrews 13:5-6).

This remarkable verse has five negatives in the Greek, so that it could even be rendered literally as: "I will never, never leave thee, and never, never, never forsake thee." Surely this is one of the greatest of God’s "exceeding great and precious promises" (2nd Peter 1:4).

It was given through Moses to the children of Israel as they were preparing to enter the land promised long ago to Abraham. Two verses later, it was then repeated personally for Joshua, who was to be their leader in their coming battles for the promised land.

The same promise was made to Jacob as he began to assume his God-ordained role. "Behold, I am with thee," God had said, "For I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of" (Genesis 28:15). It was again repeated directly to Joshua by God. "As I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee" (Joshua 1:5).

David passed on the same promise to Solomon as he became responsible for the kingdom and for building the great temple. "[God] will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD" (1 Chronicles 28:20). "I the God of Israel will not forsake them" (Isaiah 41:17) was the Lord’s promise still later to the faithful Israelites.

The Lord says throughout the Scriptures, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you." Faithful disciples respond with confidence, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid." (Hebrews 13:5,6).

Mankind can only say, "I do not know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future." The Lord says He will never desert us. That’s right, "Never!" The Lord has promised that even in the darkest night; even in death, and in life again, His faithful ones will not be abandoned. "Never."

Man, operating in error, sometimes makes similar promises, using the term "never" but failing to keep them. Not always dishonestly, but miscalculating his own inability.
Peter told Jesus that he would never deny Him, but later did. He underestimated how frightened he would be.
He was later wretchedly sorry, but he had done what he had done, that which he had vowed he would never do. He had not known what the future held, nor his own lack of strength.

God, however, does. We must each to the best of our ability, fortify ourselves for an uncertain future, search out the weaknesses within us and strengthen ourselves against them, then trust God.

"If God has loved us, who can separate us from His love?" "Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?" (Romans 8:35)

God knows the future, and He knows us. He is well able to say with certainty to all those who live by faith in Christ, "I will never forsake you."

Nothing will change that. Nothing. Ever.

Thank you for posting God's word to believers in the days we live. As We do not know how dark the day's will become or how difficult before Jesus calls us to the marriage supper.
What hope would we have, what despair would we dwell in, if it were not for God's promises.
God Bless
Maranatha,

Thank you, Jack,

The words of our Lord are the greatest gift we can give anyone, to believers to add reassurance, or doubters, to point them to Jesus Christ, their only source of eternal security - for there is nothing greater on earth or in heaven than the words of He who spoke the Universe into existence.
